Children with sensory challenges often have difficulties with self-regulation and this can impact their sleep-wake cycle. They may have irregular sleep patterns and struggle to maintain a consistent bedtime routine. This can result in them feeling tired and fatigued during the day.

A sensory-friendly bedroom is so important for children with sensory processing disorder and Autism. This means creating a calming environment that minimizes sensory input.

🌄 Use blackout curtains to block the light or a sound machine to block out external noise.

🛌 Using a weighted blanket or compression sheets to provide a calming sensation

📱 Use dimmed lighting and avoiding screens before bedtime

Children with sensory processing disorder and Autism thrive with structure and consistency. Establishing a regular bedtime routine can help them relax and prepare for sleep. Calming sensory activities before bedtime like a bath, reading a book or listen to calming music can be helpful.

Trying to understand why your child is engaging in the problem behavior even more frequently than they were BEFORE you began implementing the behavior plan? 🤯

This is called an 💥extinction burst💥

An extinction burst occurs when the reinforcement that caused a behavior has been removed (example: attention) for some time. Initially there will be an ⬆️increase⬆️ in the observed behavior. This is an attempt of your child to try to obtain the reinforcement (example: attention) by causing more behaviors.

With the parent's consistent follow through in removing any reinforcement for the negative behavior, the negative behavior will extinguish.
While a child may elect to test the outcome again in the future, this will be short lived as long as the parent maintains their consistency.

5 myths about ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) Therapy:

1. ABA is for autism only
💡ABA principles can be used with a variety of
clients, including businesses and employees.

2. ABA is strictly "table time"
💡Discrete trial training is popularly referred to as "table time” however, this is not always true and NET (natural environment training) should also be a major part of therapy.

3. ABA tries to change the client
💡One of the major goals of ABA is to influence the environmental variables surrounding the client in order to help the client succeed.

4. ABA can't work with other fields
💡Behavior analysts and therapists can and SHOULD collaborate with other professionals, including but not limited to SLPs, OTs, and PT's.

5. ABA is the same across time
💡ABA has not always been ethical. The type of ABA therapy that was conducted in the 1960’s is and should be drastically different from ABA today.

Sequencing issues in autism refer to difficulties in organizing and ordering thoughts, actions, or events in a logical or timely manner. This can manifest as problems following instructions, completing multi-step tasks, or recalling events in the correct order. These difficulties stem from challenges with executive functions, which are crucial for planning, organizing, and executing tasks.

Communication isn't just one of our core values; it's a part of life. Imagine not having the tools to communicate your wants, needs, feelings or desires. This missing piece is likely to cause many challenging behaviors that act as obstacles to learning. We explore different methods of communication to help each child overcome this barrier. We focus on skill building and establishing daily living routines. We also help with potty training at all levels.

Why is parent/caregiver training so valuable? 🤔

Because parents know their kiddos best! 😎

When working with parents, it is important to remember to work together collaboratively rather than in an expert-client dynamic. Parents have knowledge and know the history of their child. This information along with their parental insight combined with the professionals knowledge of effective treatment strategies can be combined in a collaborative manner to individualize the services and create the best chance for optimal outcomes for the child (Albone-Bushnell, 2014).

How do we use ABA to systematically decrease problem behaviors?
First we figure out the function!💡

The first step in decreasing a challenging behavior is determining the reason why the behavior is occurring. Does their head hurt? Could it be the change of weather? Do they really want something but are having a hard time telling you?

FBAs (Functional Behavior Assessments) allow us to discover the function. Once we know that key element, we develop and implement behavior strategies, collect data, and change treatment packages as needed.
