Did you know that one in five visits to the emergency department are due to adverse drug reactions? Here are ways to prevent them from happening.
• Communicate openly with healthcare providers about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements and herbs.
• Consistent use of the same pharmacy, following instructions carefully, and being aware of potential food, alcohol and caffeine interactions also plays a vital role.
• Adhere to the dosage, timing, and instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist.
• Learn about possible drug interactions with food, beverages (especially alcohol and grapefruit juice), and other medications.
• Take medications in a well-lit, safe environment, and avoid taking them when tired or distracted.
• Store medications safely and out of reach of children.
• If you have any questions or concerns about medication interactions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
