Cody Stephens Go Big or Go Home Memorial Foundation

Cody Stephens Go Big or Go Home Memorial Foundation At 6’9″ and weighing 289 lbs, he seemed to be in perfect health, with no indication he had a fatal heart problem.

We partner with schools to implement heart screening programs with electrocardiogram as a part of pre-participation physicals, and raise awareness that Sudden Cardiac Arrest is preventable. On May 6, 2012, Cody Stephens was a few weeks from graduating from Crosby High School, and looking forward to showing his pig, steer and lamb at the Crosby Fair and Rodeo in June. He was also excited to be headed to Tarleton State University on a football scholarship, and working to stay in good physical condition to be prepared for college football practices. On that Sunday afternoon, Cody kicked back in his dad’s recliner, said he was tired and dozed off for a nap. He never woke up but died in his sleep, from Sudden Cardiac Arrest. His family had never heard of SCA and had no idea that young, seemingly healthy children were at risk with relatively few or no warning signs. This foundation was created to share Cody’s story with others, to raise awareness of this silent killer and help prevent other families from experiencing the loss and heartache of losing a child to SCA.

Cody Stephens Foundation Identifies Eight Students With Heart Abnormalities After Harris County ESD 11 EKG Screen
Houston, Tx. August 25, 2025: The Cody Stephens Foundation performed over 400 free electrocardiogram (EKG) screens on student athletes at the Harris County ESD 11 campus last Sunday. After all the tests were evaluated seven students were identified as having an undiagnosed heart disease and one with an irregular heart beat.
Founder Scott Stephens says on average 2% of the students they test at these events have an undiagnosed heart abnormality that could lead to serious consequences if not treated.
“This is why these scans are so important and why we are so grateful to have a community partner like Harris County ESD 11 host this event and offer CPR training for the parents who come. This one event potentially saved eight families from having to endure the heartbreak I experienced from losing my son Cody.”
“We are so proud to do what we can to support the lifesaving work of the Cody Stephens Foundation,” says Harris County ESD 11 CEO Jordan Anderson. “We are currently working with the Foundation on more ways we can expand our support to help even more families get these lifesaving scans.”
About the Cody Stephens Foundation:
Cody Stephens was a 6’9″, 289-pound athlete with dreams as big as his heart — literally. A beloved son, teammate, and friend, Cody had committed to play college football when tragedy struck. In May 2012, Cody fell asleep in his father’s recliner and never woke up, the victim of an undetected heart condition.
His passing left a hole in his family and community, but it also ignited a mission.
Today, Cody’s legacy lives on through heart screenings, education, and legislation that give other young athletes a second chance. The mission of our foundation is to partner with schools to implement heart screening programs with electrocardiogram as a part of pre-participation physicals, and raise awareness that Sudden Cardiac Arrest is preventable.

Story time: Today’s screening event was nothing short of amazing even to me, the grizzled veteran of so many. First is was a complete “sellout” if you will. 500 students signed up. We screened 48 young hearts every 20 minutes. Meanwhile we told heart stories to those waiting and the parents waiting on their students. 1 NFL veteran who had SCA in college, the wife of an NFL star who’s brother survived SCA but is fighting thru much damage, a young man who’s HCM was discovered because of mandatory screening at Crosby ISD, a 6’2” woodlands volleyball player who survived SCA because her mom and sister knew to do CPR, she’s studying to be a doctor at UT, a survivor who’s giving back by through his career working with pacemakers, one of which can be found in his own chest after his 2 sca’s in high school, the wonderful staff of the foundation and myself telling Cody’s story and the founding of the foundation. All were well received.

Secondly from the department of you can’t make this up. We had a number of walk ins today. Guess the number.. yep you guessed it! 76!

The hardest moment of the day for me was when a mother or grandmother of a student there for a screening pulled me aside. Tears streaming from her sad eyes as she said I have to thank you. My nephew was screened by you 9 years ago. You told us to go to the doctor and we did. Immediately. Her hands trembled as she said we just lost him. But because of you he lived 9 years more. She said he had gone through numerous surgeries and fought a valiant fight. We hugged and cried in the front corner of the room. What a gracious lady to tell her story to me and I’ve never experienced a more heartfelt thank you.

Finally after the long day and drive home I was listening to a gospel station as I often do on sundays. As I turned the last turn to my house a song comes on that I immediately associate with Cody. I first heard it when Jonah Ramirez sang it at Cody’s funeral. Folks you can’t make this stuff up. Ships of Heaven by Blackhawk

Cecil says screen em all!

Beneath the bright lights of NRG Stadium, where dreams are made and heroes are born, Cecil Shorts would race into the end zone, scoring touchdowns for the Houston Texans — a symbol of strength, agility, and spirit.

As you know if you follow me we are having a community heart screening this upcoming Sunday the 17th (see my page to sign up) and of course as always Bill Spencer of KPRC channel 2 has graciously provided the publicity we need to fill it up. Here’s the cool news. Three segments will air on KPRC this week at 10 pm beginning Wednesday and extending through friday. Hope you get a chance to watch these stories. They are centered around a female volleyball player in the woodlands who survived a sudden cardiac arrest, a young football player in Crosby who discovered his hearts Issue after an ecg and Cecil Shorts, former nfl wide receiver who lost a brother in law to SCA. We simply must screen em all!
