What Is a Sensory Corner?

A sensory corner is a small, predictable space designed to support regulation, emotional control, focus, and participation in daily activities.

It does not need to be expensive or take up an entire room.

Include Calming Supports
Bean bag or floor cushion
Soft blanket or weighted lap pad
Noise-reducing headphones
Dim lighting or string lights
Calm sensory visuals

These supports help reduce sensory overload and promote regulation.

Add Heavy Work Options

Proprioceptive input is often organizing for the nervous system.

Try:

Therapy putty
Resistance bands
Wall push-ups
Weighted stuffed animals
Pushing or pulling activities
Keep the Space Simple

Too much visual clutter can increase dysregulation.

Helpful tips:

Limit toys and distractions
Use neutral or calming colors
Organize materials in bins or baskets
Rotate sensory tools as needed
Make It Functional

A sensory corner should support participation in meaningful activities such as:

Homework
Reading
Emotional regulation
Transitions
Quiet breaks
Self-care routines

Sensory supports are tools to help the child access daily occupations.

OT Tip

Observe which sensory tools actually improve participation.
If a strategy does not help the child engage more successfully, adjust the environment or sensory supports.

✋ Manual Dexterity Goals for Fine Motor Skills

Manual dexterity refers to the ability to use the hands and fingers in a coordinated, controlled, and efficient way during daily tasks. It involves speed, precision, coordination, motor planning, and finger strength. Manual dexterity is essential for handwriting, dressing, feeding, manipulating school tools, and completing self-care tasks independently.

In occupational therapy, manual dexterity goals often focus on improving a child’s ability to perform functional tasks with greater accuracy, control, endurance, and independence.

🧠 Skills Involved in Manual Dexterity
Finger isolation
In-hand manipulation
Bilateral coordination
Motor planning
Grasp strength and endurance
Visual-motor integration
Hand-eye coordination
✏️ Examples of Manual Dexterity Goals
School-Based Fine Motor Goals
Student will manipulate small classroom materials (paper clips, counters, beads) using a functional grasp pattern with improved control in 4/5 opportunities.
Student will complete cutting tasks along curved and angled lines with smooth hand movements and minimal deviation from the line.
Student will independently rotate a pencil within the hand to position the eraser during writing tasks.
Self-Care Goals
Student will button and unbutton 5 medium-sized buttons independently within 2 minutes.
Student will open food containers and snack packaging independently during lunch routines.
Student will manipulate zippers, snaps, and fasteners using coordinated bilateral hand movements.
Handwriting & Tool Use Goals
Student will maintain a functional tripod grasp during tabletop tasks for 10 minutes without fatigue.
Student will manipulate and stabilize paper while writing or coloring using the helper hand appropriately.
Student will improve dexterity needed for keyboarding by isolating fingers during typing activities.
🎯 Activities That Support Manual Dexterity
Tweezer and tong games
Beading and lacing
Coin rotation activities
Theraputty exercises
Pegboards and pop beads
Clothespin activities
Lego building
Nuts and bolts tasks
Sticker peeling and placement
Paper crumpling, folding, and tearing

What does OT look like for a child with cerebral palsy?

It looks like small steps toward big independence.
It looks like learning to hold a spoon, zip a coat, or play with both hands.
It looks like adapting the task, not lowering the expectation.

Occupational therapy for CP focuses on:
🖐️ Fine motor skills
👕 Self-care (dressing, feeding, grooming)
🧠 Motor planning and coordination
🪑 Positioning and adaptive tools
🎯 Sensory regulation
🧩 Building confidence through play

OTs meet kids where they are and help them build the skills they need to participate fully in their world, at home, at school, and everywhere in between. More strategies and information HERE> https://www.theottoolbox.com/occupational-therapy-for-children-with-cerebral-palsy/

Patient reviews are an important part of a doctor’s online reputation management strategy. In fact, 71 percent of patients use online reviews as the first step to finding a new doctor. Despite the benefits of online reviews, many doctors and their staff don’t ask patients to write them because they feel uncomfortable. However, online reviews are a crucial component of every healthcare reputation management strategy, so you can’t afford not to ask.

It’s time to ditch the negative stigma you’ve attached to the act of requesting online reviews. Here are a few tips to broach the subject when talking with patients in person:🌐 www.hellonote.com/top-5-ways-to-obtain-patient-reviews-and-testimonials
