As I begin phase 3 of my Registered Play Therapy (RPT) credential, I often think about how not all play therapy is equal. Play therapy is not a protected term. This means that anyone with a mental health profession that chooses to see children can say they offer “play therapy”.
A licensed counselor that has their RPT credential has completed a minimum of 250 play therapy technique clinical hours, 25 play therapy supervision hours, and 141 hours of continuing education focused on play therapy theory, skills, history, and social and cultural diversity. This is all completed over a minimum of 2 years.
This does not mean that there aren’t wonderful clinicians out there conducting meaningful sessions where they are helping the child and using toys to facilitate growth. It does mean that understanding allows us to make the best choices for our littles.
So please, ask questions and make informed decisions when it comes to your child’s mental health counseling services.
You don’t know, what you don’t know, but now you do.
