True North recently began our 13TH COHORT! Wow. Just Wow. This treatment program has been blessed in a MIGHTY WAY and I am inordinately THANKFUL!! Our partners in Cumberland County are so faithful in continuing to make True North for Early Intervention treatment possible for youth ages 13-17 years old. So in case I have not said this publicly before, Thank You!! Thank you to: TICA (Trauma Informed Community Alliance), our parent organization C5 Christian Counseling, Cumberland Fellowship Church, Juvenile Court personnel of Cumberland County, Youth Service Officers of Cumberland County, Tennessee Department of Children's Services and many others who continue to make this program happen. Happy 4th everyone. And thank you - for your service to our youth.

SO MANY SNOW DAYS!!!! If you're freezing like I am and it seems the rest of the world is too, you have my prayers! We are HOPING DILIGENTLY to begin Cohort #12 tomorrow, THURSDAY, 1/23, at 5:00 P.M. We will continue to follow in the footsteps of Cumberland County Schools. I know it may seem ridiculous but we, at times, have had kids who live 15+ miles from town. We want you safe! We meet in one of The Attic buildings of Cumberland Fellowship Church (1640 West Avenue, Crossville).

Our new class seems to be growing by numbers weekly so it's going to be a great one! If you have not signed up and would like to, please come. We can still take new students up until the 3rd session. Parents must come to the first class for intake paperwork. We HOPE to see you there!!

12 cycles beginning in January '25! Wow! I am in awe and inspired by the longevity provided for the work of True North. I can't get enough of the wisdom, good humor and perceptive awareness of these kids! We make assumptions of the word 'teen'. We are often incorrect. They have more empathy, understanding, awareness and ability to see truth than many adults I've met in my lifetime. They also speak truth. That, in and of itself, is perhaps the reason I personally continue with passion and never-ending curiosity to seek understanding of this population. They overcome, daily, obstacles you and I cannot begin to perceive and they refuse to quit; sometimes in the most formidable of circumstances. Thank you for your continued support! Our next cohort will commence January 8, 2025. If you have a teen within your circle struggling with addiction (of ANY kind) we welcome them! Due to the continued support and backing of our parent agency C5 Christian Counseling and TICA (the Trauma Informed Community Alliance), our program is free. The only thing we ask of you is your commitment. Beginning in January we will offer TWO classes, one for middle school and one for high school. In addition, we will provide counseling for parents and guardians. It's a true Win - Win!! See you soon!!

Another cycle down - and Lord willing - many many to go. These kids continue to inspire, motivate, challenge and lead me to listen, learn and hopefully, implement new ways to serve them in their journey. They are truly amazing people! They keep me on my toes, rolling on the floor in laughter and my ears fine-tuned for their pain, their joys, their hardships and their victories. We are, as I always tell them, teaching each other. The objective is not perfection - the objective is a heart open to what God has for us to hear and learn. For ALL of us. We begin our next session on January 12. I am incredibly GRATEFUL and THANKFUL for Tatiana Bauer - who will be leading this cycle. BE READY! She is a heart-leading, truth-speaking encourager of the highest order. You will NOT be disappointed. Thank YOU Tatiana! From the bottom of my heart. THANK YOU. And kids? See you very. very soon!

Getting ready to begin our 6th cohort tomorrow. Wow! How amazing is that? We have had some repeats along the way. For the most part our kids are doing all they can to stay clean. That doesn’t mean they have been 100% successful. That means they are trying! They have come back to us for assistance and advice. They have come back to us just wanting to ‘be there’ because it helps them. That’s what it’s all about! Support, encouragement, belief in and hope for a brighter future. We SEE that for our True North kids! We want you to see it as well. So welcome cohort number 6. We will do our very best by you!!

We are HALF WAY IN on our present cycle! It never ceases to amaze me how quick each class runs. These kids - this class - they are buying in and it is EXCITING to watch! Do I think they are going to make up their minds to never use again? Possibly. Do I think they are thinking hard about their life choices and how those have implications forever? ABSOLUTELY! And that's the most exciting piece of the process; to see kids buy in to the point that they are participating, talking, telling us their struggles and challenges... those are the BEST!! If you're wrestling with issues of possible addiction, actual addiction or just want to know more about it, COME AND SEE US!! True North is growing!! We are so excited to offer the kids in Cumberland County an option as they grapple with issues of addiction and life skills.

Tonight starts a NEW rotation! If you have been mandated to attend as a component of your probation, if your parents are making attendance mandatory or if you have issues with addiction and want help (NO MATTER WHAT the addiction is) - We are here to help.

Remember we meet at THE ATTIC on the campus of Cumberland Fellowship Church. We are SO THANKFUL for CF providing us this AMAZING space. Times are 6p-7:30p (sometimes a little bit later - dependent on the great conversation :-). We always have dinner (EXCEPT FOR TONIGHT)... SO DON'T EAT!

There are 12 SESSIONS in each Rotation. We will accept new members for the first 3 weeks. After that, you will need to wait for the next rotation.

Tonight is intake night so BRING YOUR PARENT OR GUARDIAN. They will need to complete and sign paperwork with you (unless you are over 16 y-o in which case you can sign your own paperwork). Also, there will be no meal tonight b/c it is not a full session. Once you complete your paperwork, review it with your group counselor and go over rights and expectations - you are free to go.

We will see you tonight! Can't wait to get to know you!!

There are two more weeks in the current True North cycle. If you have been mandated by your Youth Services Officer or Juvenile Court to attend True North and you are waiting on a new start date, your date will be February 3. On that date we will begin a new 12 week cycle. See you then!!☺

“In a collaboration between The Cumberland Prevention Coalition, The Christian Counseling Center of Cumberland County and Cumberland Fellowship Church, True North, a program for juvenile justice offenders and area youth struggling with addiction, was created. Cumberland Prevention Coalition’s work to support our True North Program has had/and will continue to impact the lives of at-risk youth in our community. Their educational programs have, in an honest and meaningful way been changing beliefs and attitudes about substance abuse within our county and community. The program is based primarily upon the tenets of the "Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach" (ACRA), an evidenced based program recognized by the ASAM and supplemented by material from "The American Society of Addiction Handbook of Addiction" with materials from the "Motivational Interviewing Workbook", "Mindfulness Workbook for Addiction", "The Landing" a faith-based addiction curriculum for adolescents and finally "Substance Abuse Treatment for Youth and Adults - A Clinician's Guide to EBP". This meaningful, imperative, educational and timely program could not have been established without the support, both material and educational through the "Foundation for a Drug-Free World" enhancement of the Coalition.
As the lead counselor for the program, I witness weekly how the adolescents in this program respond to the judgement-free, safe-to-be-me, anonymity zone created through our collaborative, mission-aligned practices which the Coalition not only offers but more importantly participates in as we seek to reduce self-harm in the lives of our area youth and community.”
