💧 Dry Eye Relief: Have You Heard of Punctal Plugs?

If your eyes constantly feel dry, irritated, or like there’s something in them—you’re not alone. Dry Eye Disease is something we see every single day.

One treatment option we use is punctal plugs—tiny, comfortable inserts placed in your tear ducts to help keep your natural tears on your eyes longer. Think of it like “holding the moisture in” instead of letting it drain away too quickly.

✔️ Quick, in-office procedure
✔️ Completely painless for most patients
✔️ Can provide lasting relief

But here’s the key: punctal plugs are just one of the tools in our toolbox.

At Boyd Family Eyecare, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all treatment. Dry eye is complex, and we build a plan tailored specifically for you—whether that includes drops, lid treatments, in-office therapies, or more advanced solutions.

👉 If your eyes are burning, watering, or constantly irritated, let’s find the real cause and treat it the right way.

We Focus On You.

👁️ ANSWER: FALSE

Dry eye isn’t just an “older adult” problem — it affects people of all ages.

At Boyd Family Eyecare, we’re seeing more and more younger patients dealing with dry eye symptoms — and most are surprised by it.

Here’s why it’s becoming so common:

• 📱 Screen time – We blink less when using phones and computers
• 💻 Digital eye strain – Long hours on screens affect tear stability
• 👁️ Contact lenses – Can increase dryness and irritation
• 🌬️ Everyday environment – Heat, air conditioning, and allergens all contribute

What does dry eye feel like?
Burning, watering, gritty sensation, blurry vision, or tired eyes — especially at the end of the day.

👓 The takeaway:

Dry eye doesn’t discriminate by age.
If your eyes aren’t feeling right, there’s a reason — and there’s help.

😴 Sleeping in Your Contacts? Think Again.

We get it—after a long day, it’s easy to forget you still have your contact lenses in. But sleeping in your contacts can put your eyes at serious risk.

👁️ Only a small number of contact lens brands are actually approved for extended (overnight) wear—and even those come with increased risk. Most lenses are designed to be removed before sleeping.

🚫 When you sleep in contacts, your eyes receive less oxygen, creating the perfect environment for bacteria to grow. This can lead to one of the most serious eye infections we see:

⚠️ Corneal Ulcer (Infection of the Eye)

Severe pain and redness
Light sensitivity
Blurry vision
Discharge from the eye
In worst cases… permanent vision loss

These infections can develop quickly and may require urgent treatment to prevent lasting damage.

💡 Bottom line:
If your lenses are not specifically prescribed for overnight wear—take them out before bed. Every time.

👉 Trust us, we’ve seen the consequences—and we don’t want to see you in our chair because of something preventable.

👁️ Why Does My Eye Keep “Scratching” Over and Over?

Wake up with sharp eye pain like something is in your eye—but no recent injury?

You may have Recurrent Corneal Erosion (RCE).

💥 How it starts:
Often begins with a simple corneal abrasion (fingernail, paper cut, etc.). Even after it “heals,” the surface may not reattach properly.

😴 What happens:
Overnight, the cornea can stick to your eyelid… and when you open your eye, it pulls loose again.

⚠️ Symptoms:
• Sharp pain (often upon waking)
• Tearing & redness
• Light sensitivity
• Blurry vision
• “Something in my eye” feeling

🔁 Why it keeps coming back:
The cornea doesn’t form a strong attachment without proper treatment—so it reopens repeatedly.

🛠️ Treatment options include:
• Lubricating drops/ointments
• Bandage contact lenses
• Medicated drops
• Amniotic membranes to promote healing
• In-office procedures for stubborn cases

👉 Don’t ignore recurring eye pain—we treat the root cause, not just the symptoms.

🌱🚧 W**d Eating? Protect Your Eyes! 👀

That quick yard cleanup can turn dangerous in an instant.

A w**d trimmer can launch small rocks or debris at speeds of 100–200+ mph—faster than you might expect.

⚠️ That tiny pebble can cause:

Corneal scratches (abrasions)
Internal eye bleeding
Retinal damage
Even permanent vision loss

All it takes is one hit.

🛑 Protect Yourself:

Wear safety glasses at a minimum
Even better: use a full face shield
Be extra cautious around gravel and hard surfaces

👓 Trust us—we’ve seen the damage these injuries can cause, and we don’t want to see you in our office for this.

🌸🧼 Spring Cleaning? Protect Your Eyes! 👀

Spring cleaning season is here—but many everyday cleaners can be harmful if splashed in your eyes.

⚠️ Use caution with:

Bleach
Ammonia (glass cleaners)
Oven & drain cleaners
Mold & mildew sprays
Aerosol/all-purpose cleaners

These products can cause redness, irritation, blurred vision, or even chemical burns.

🚨 If a cleaner gets in your eye:

Flush immediately with clean, lukewarm water for 15–20 minutes
Remove contact lenses if you wear them
Avoid rubbing your eye
Seek care right away if symptoms persist

👓 Pro Tip:
Wear protective eyewear and turn your face away when spraying.

👀 Is your child needing stronger glasses every year?

That’s often a sign of progressive myopia (nearsightedness)—and today, we can do more than just keep updating prescriptions.

At Boyd Family Eyecare, we focus on myopia management, which means working to slow down how quickly your child’s vision worsens—not just correcting it.

Why does that matter? Because higher levels of myopia are linked to an increased risk of serious eye conditions later in life.

👓 It’s not just about seeing clearly today—it’s about protecting your child’s vision for the future.

📞 Call us to schedule a myopia evaluation.
