Oregano essential oil and oil of Oregano sound like the same thing, but theyโre VERY different in strength, safety, and how they should be used. They are NOT the same.
๐ฟ Oil of Oregano (herbal extract) is an extract made by soaking oregano leaves in a carrier oil (like olive oil). Sometimes itโs sold in softgels or tinctures. Itโs much milder and gentler than essential oil. It can be taken internally (capsules/liquid) or applied topically. Used for immune support, colds, or digestive balance. Safer for general use since itโs not as concentrated. We use it in place of antibiotics.
๐ธ Oregano Essential Oil is pure, steam-distilled volatile oil from oregano leaves.
Itโs extremely concentratedโฆ we are talking dozens of pounds of oregano leaves go into a one small bottle. Far stronger than oil of oregano. Itโs primarily used for aromatherapy or topical use (with HEAVY dilution). Internal use is risky and should only be done with professional supervision. And even then itโs safer to just use oil of oregano. It is so hot, that it can burn skin and mucous membranes. It can also damage the gut lining if swallowed undiluted. It can also stress liver/kidneys, interact with medications, or disrupt gut microbiome. Overuse or long-term use may cause liver toxicity or stress on the kidneys. Itโs not safe for children, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
