We know we’re a little late, but we couldn’t let World Health Day pass without a shoutout 💙🌍

This year’s theme, “Healthy Beginnings & Hopeful Futures,” reminds us how crucial it is to protect the health of mothers and newborns — especially Black mothers, who are 3–4x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes.

At the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health, we’re committed to raising awareness and fighting for equitable healthcare for all. Let’s keep the conversation going, because every mother deserves a healthy beginning and a hopeful future. 💪🏾💕

Celebrating the legacy of Percy Lavon Julian this Black History Month!

Percy Lavon Julian was the first person to synthesize Physostigmine, and a pioneer in large-scale chemical synthesis of the human hormones progesterone and testosterone from plants sterol such as stigmasterol and sitosterol. His work laid the foundation for the drug industry’s production of cortisone, and other corticosteroids, as well as artificial hormones that led to the production of birth control pills.

Julian started his own company to synthesize steroid intermediates from wild Mexican yams. His work helped greatly reduce the cost of steroid intermediates, helping to significantly expand the use of several important drugs, including synthetic cortisone.

Honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A Baptist minister and social activist, led the civil rights movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his unfortunate death in 1968, at the age of 39. King rose to national prominence as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which promoted nonviolent tactics, such as the March on Washington that took place in 1963, to achieve civil rights. A year later, Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Dr. King’s leadership was instrumental in ending racial segregation in the South and other parts of the United States.
