Many women in my practice use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to ease menopause symptoms. Of course, HRT is not right for every woman, particularly if breast, ovarian or endometrial cancer, stroke or blood clots are a risk. If they are, you might instead take supplements. But should they? Do you use menopause related supplements? Do you think they’re effective?

In 1942, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals introduced the first hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women going through menopause. Over the intervening decades, doctors have gone back and forth on the safety and efficacy of using HRT to treat symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal discomfort.

Many of my patients are dealing with stress-induced insomnia. But they’re not alone. A recent report found that American adults are more stressed and sleeping less. Here are some tips and tricks that I’ve taught my patients that can help ease your stress and get better sleep. Do you struggle with insomnia? Do you have advice for others?

If you’re struggling to get a good night’s sleep, chances are you’re stressed. Stress is another public health issue plaguing America. In fact, more than 25% of American adults reporting being so stressed that they can’t function, according to a poll conducted by the American Psychological A...

I’ve spent years teaching my patients how to read nutrition labels, primarily focusing on serving sizes, calories and grams of sugar. But there’s more on a label than those three things. Ingredients matter too, especially preservatives added to processed foods to sustain shelf life. Many preservatives are deemed safe, but some should be limited or even avoided, such as the five listed in this link. Are you concerned about preservatives? Do you ever notice the five discussed in the blog on your labels?

Processed foods can be a double-edge sword. On one hand, they’re easy, convenient time savers. But they are often made with questionable ingredients, from high fructose corn syrup, excessive salt and added sugars.

A few of my patients are die-hard outdoor exercisers, which can be tough in extreme elements like summer’s very high temperatures. But there are a handful of tactics you can take to help make your summer workouts safer.

It’s mid-summer, 90 degrees and humid, but you want to work out and you prefer doing it outdoors. Treadmills really aren’t your thing – you feel like a hamster walking or running on one. You’re probably aware summer heat raises your risk for sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat str...

Weight loss is a top concern in my practice. Many patients can drop some weight after making some simple lifestyle changes. But sometimes, lifestyle changes aren’t enough. There’s a deeper issue involved, for example, gut health. Here’s how your gut biome can affect your weight.

You’ve cleaned-up your diet, cut your calories and ramped up your workouts, but the scale still hasn’t budged. We all know that managing weight can be a difficult, complex process. And experts still don’t have all the answers. But a new weight management variable has caught the attention of re...

Extreme heat can be problematic for your health, especially if you’re active outdoors. At the beginning of each summer, I tell my patients how important it is to prevent heat-related issues. Here’s what I tell them.

Summer 2023 was the hottest summer on record, according to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (more commonly known as NASA). And summer 2024 is on track to beat it.

It’s important to adopt a gut-friendly diet. Poor gut health can lead to digestive issues, a weak immune system, skin problems and sleep disturbances. Where should you begin? I tell my patients, start by making sure you’re getting enough probiotics and prebiotics into your diet. Here’s what you need to know.

American interest in gut health began rising about 15 years ago. But research on gut microbiome dates back to the 1840s when European scientists studied the role of bacteria in the breakdown of food, the effects gut microorganisms have on health and the importance of probiotics.

In my practice, it’s my women patients who ask for help for their depression. However, I know some of my men also are struggling – but they don’t ask for help. And their relatives don’t recognize that they’re depressed because men’s depression symptoms vary from textbook symptoms. Here’s what you need to know.

Depression also affects men and in large numbers — about six million American men struggle with depression. However, it usually goes undiagnosed.
