Nicki Price, the founder of Xperience Physical Therapy, is a physical therapist, with over 16 years of clinical experience. She graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2005 with a Master's degree in Physical Therapy. While she started her career in East Lansing, MI she has spent most of her career in Iron County. Her specialties include, but are not limited to, the treatment of headaches, neck and lower back pain, orthopedic conditions, vestibular and balance impairments, sports therapy and concussion management. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family in the great outdoors. She loves camping, skiing, biking, swimming and watching her kids play sports.

Physical therapists (PTs) can help you prevent discomfort and create a workspace that supports your body.

Here are some things you can start today:
1. Move regularly.
- frequent breaks, even for 30 seconds can go a long way.
- Move in your chair to stretch your neck, shoulders, wrists and legs.
2. Improve your workspace set up to promote better posture.
- Your chair should be set up so your hips and knees are at 90 degrees
- Your arm rests should allow you to sit close to your desk
- Your keyboard should be positioned so your hands are slightly below your elbows
- Your monitor should be directly in front of you and at eye level

After months of less activity during winter, many of us are eager to get outside. But a sudden increase in activity can lead to painful overuse injuries.
Here are five simple strategies to keep you active and pain-free this season!
1. Gradually increase activity levels by no more than 10% per week. Begin with 15-30 minutes of your activity and add a little more time each week.
2. Perform proper warm-ups before any physical activity, such as a 5-10 minute walk and gentle stretching.
3. Vary activities to avoid repetitive stress on the same muscle groups.
4. Recognize and respond appropriately to pain signals. A little muscle soreness is normal, but sharp pain isn't.
5. Use ergonomic tools and proper body mechanics for activities like gardening.

Exercise shouldn't feel like a chore. Learn how to make it an enjoyable, sustainable part of your daily routine. Read on for more information!

Key tips Xperience PT says to remember are:
● Research showing that exercising four times weekly for six weeks is the minimum for habit formation
○ Schedule exercise into your calendar
○ Treat it like any other important appointment
● Starting with small, easy goals and building slowly makes exercise more sustainable
○ 5 or 10 minutes counts
○ Celebrate your small wins
● Linking exercise to things you already do makes it easier to make it a habit
○ Calf raises or squats while you morning coffee brews are a great way to start!
○ Get up and stretch during commercials or between TV shows
● Make exercise fun and you're more likely to keep doing it
○ Pick activities you like
○ Don't be afraid to try new things, you might find something you like
● Don't do it alone
○ Exercising with a friend or a group helps keep you accountable
○ Share your goals with others

Starting small and building momentum is the key to making exercise a habit. Pursuing aggressive goals often leads to burnout and disappointment.

Physical therapists are experts in movement and exercise.

They can help you create a safe exercise plan that fits your needs, work around any pain or physical limits, learn proper form to prevent injury, and safely build strength and flexibility.

Whether you're completely new to exercise or getting back into it after a break, your PT can help you start 2025 off on the right foot.

The best exercise plan is one you'll actually stick to. Start small, build slowly, and focus on consistency over perfection. Your future self will thank you!
