THE SILVER BAR
Let me tell you exactly what it is I do. But first let me tell you a story about two brothers, John and Joe. John was the youngest, his brother was 4 years older. John never got along well with his Dad; there was always a lot of tension between them. John always felt like Dad favored Joe. It wasn’t surprising then that the brothers weren’t close and John began to loose touch with the family after graduating.
One day when John had kids of his own, he decided to go see his dad and talk to him about his feelings of always feeling slighted, not enough and never included. As they talked, John remembered being a toddler and seeing his Dad giving Joe a shining silver bar and he didn’t get one! It turns out, that was no a silver bar; it was a piece of gum wrapped in silver foil. To little Johnny it looked like a big silver bar. From that day on every action and interaction in the family and in John’s life was experienced through the lens of the silver bar. Waves of grief, sadness, hidden buried anger, and resentment began to slowing roll away.
