Why We Can’t Base Health On How We Feel.
This is a 16-year-old’s spine.

Zero pain.

There’s a compression fracture.
Let that sit for a moment.

We’ve been taught to judge our health by two things:
How we feel.
How we look.
Both are wrong.
You can feel fine while your nervous system is under stress.
You can look healthy while your body compensates.
You can have zero symptoms while your body is fighting.
Pain is not the problem.
Pain is an alarm signal.
Here’s the truth:
If pain doesn’t show up when there’s a problem, then feeling good can’t be your reason to skip getting checked.
The old model: Wait for pain. React. Silence the alarm.
The better model: Support function. Optimize nervous system communication. Trust your body.

This is why we don’t make recommendations based on treating pain. We aren’t a pain clinic. This is also why we DO make recommendations to support your physiology.

Your body is brilliant.
It heals.
It adapts.
It thrives.
But it can only do this when the brain receives clear information.
The nervous system is the information highway.
When the nervous system is clear, the brain can direct healing, adaptation, and function with accuracy.
The brain runs the body.
The spine protects that connection.
When communication is interfered with, your body adapts. Often into overdrive, working overtime. Often without you feeling it.
But you will notice clues: Fatigue. Harder to recover. Decreased clarity or focus. Weaker immune system. Tightness. Irritability.
That’s why pain is an inferior measure of health.
Pain tells you when the body CANNOT compensate anymore.
Function tells you how well the body works right now.
Chiropractic clears interference so your nervous system runs the show.
You don’t wait for the check engine light to change your oil.
Don’t wait for pain to support your spine.
Get checked.
Support your nervous system.
Live fully.

“I just can’t justify the expense right now.” 💸

That’s what who we’ll call “Mike” told us before walking out of our office.
Six months later, he returned—unable to attend his son’s graduation due to debilitating pain.

Value comes in many currencies, not just dollars:
• Time with loved ones
• Ability to help others
• Sharing our gifts and talents
• Peace of mind and comfort

“If I had known delaying care would cost me these precious things—especially missing irreplaceable moments—I would have made a different choice.”

When we postpone caring for our health, we’re not just risking financial expense. We risk the things that truly matter: our ability to be present, to serve, to give, and to share the blessings we’ve been given.

At Crystal Lake Family Wellness, we understand that value goes far beyond money. Health is the foundation that allows us to live out our purpose and cherish what matters most.

Your future self—and those who count on you—are worth the investment.

Enjoy this throwback! Who wore it better? 💃🤵♂️We noticed that we both had khakis and florals the other day at the office.

Isn't it interesting how similar and yet distinct two people can be? If you have multiple children, you've probably thought at some point, "How did they both come from the same parents - they're so different!" 🤣

It's a beautiful thing that human anatomy is so similar (we all have one brain and one heart, for example.) But we all express life in wildly different and wonderful ways!

That's part of what makes it exciting to be a chiropractor. Our adjustments are specific to you, and where we find interference in your nervous system on that day.

The nervous system is the foundation for all function in every single human's body, no matter the age, race, religion or background.

The adjustment is neurological because motion and neurology go together!
We are constantly working to achieve a gentle, precise, powerful, intentional adjustment.

(And we look pretty good doing it too.) 🤣

When Trampolines Make You Dizzy: It's Not Just "Getting Old" 🤸♀️
I wanted to reshare this post from last spring, because I think it is important!

I had an interesting conversation at my daughter's gymnastics class. A fellow mom mentioned she gets dizzy when jumping on the trampoline and just chalked it up to "getting old." (She's definitely not old!)

What's really happening? It's likely stress on her occiput—the base of the skull where it meets the spine.

(Quick anatomy note: The occiput is that bony part at the bottom of your skull where your head connects to your neck. Place your hand on the back of your head where it curves inward toward your neck—that's your occiput! This crucial junction is where your brain connects to your spinal cord.)

The occiput has a high concentration of proprioceptive nerves—think of these as your body's "parking sensors" that tell your brain where you are in space! When these nerves are under stress and suddenly have to process rapid movements (like trampoline jumping), they can become dysregulated. The result? Dizziness and disorientation.

As a chiropractor, I see this regularly. By identifying where stress affects the occipital segment, we can perform precise adjustments that remove this interference. Your body is designed to heal itself—but it needs proper nerve function to do its job! Remove the interference, and normal function returns.

Here's something important: We often don't notice these issues until they're "tested."

Your back might feel fine until you're gardening. You might feel healthy until the change of seasons brings on sickness. That dizzy feeling might only appear during specific movements.

Research supports this approach! A study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic care, specifically upper cervical adjustments, significantly improved vertigo symptoms in 80% of patients suffering from chronic vertigo.

This is why regular maintenance of your nervous system is essential! When we wait for the "problem-react cycle," we're always playing catch-up. These symptoms may be common, but they aren't normal!

We wanted to share this awesome story again! Sam is a dad of two and devoted husband, who refused to accept what he was being told that medication was inevitable.

When his blood pressure started climbing, he heard the same story I grew up with: “It runs in your family. Nothing you can do.”

My family believed that too. Mother, father, grandparents, uncles—even my Olympic rower uncle with incredible conditioning. We were told it was “just genetic.”
Three weeks ago, Sam went off his blood pressure medication.
His readings are normal now, not through adding more chemicals to his system, but by removing interference so his nervous system could regulate blood pressure naturally.

➡➡➡Dads, here’s what we want you to hear, loud and clear:
Your family doesn’t need you to just “push through.” They need you thriving.
As dads, we put ourselves last. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” becomes our health philosophy.

But small interferences compound over years, and what feels “fine” today becomes your family’s crisis tomorrow.

The real question is can your family afford for you NOT to take care of yourself?
Your body has incredible wisdom when interference is removed.

The same nervous system controlling your blood pressure also controls your ability to think clearly under stress, respond patiently to your children, and show up as the steady presence your family depends on.

Dads, your family needs you to be strong for decades, not just surviving today.
That requires maintenance, not crisis management.

Last summer, we introduced something together that stood for us. That stood for who we are and what we do. We wanted to share the why behind our logo again!
Drumroll… here it is.
Why the Dandelion? 🌻

The dandelion’s deep taproot mirrors what we believe about health - it all starts with a strong foundation. Just like the nervous system nourishes your entire body, the dandelion’s roots anchor and feed the whole plant.

Dandelions are incredibly resilient, thriving anywhere they’re planted. We see this same resilience in your body when your nervous system is aligned and free from interference.

As husband and wife chiropractors with homesteading hearts, the dandelion represents our connection to natural living and God’s design of the human body. When dandelion seeds scatter in the wind, they create new connections across the landscape - just like how true health connects every part of your life.

For us, this isn’t just our profession - it’s who we are. The humble dandelion reminds us that the most powerful healing often comes from returning to what’s natural, fundamental, and divinely designed.

That’s what chiropractic is all about. 🌱

PS special thanks to Roxanne for helping with the logo. We love it.

Our Story

Two biology majors met one rainy fall morning in Rindge, New Hampshire in Physics class. Emily Schultz, now commonly known as Dr. Emily, had dreams of being a Chiropractor since 12 years old. She had been a competitive volleyball player, and now was still playing at a collegiate level. At 12 she had suffered from sciatica and migraine headaches, and her Chiropractor had helped her with these immensely.

Josh Young had aspirations to become a medical doctor. His father is a medical doctor, and his father’s father was a medical doctor, as well as two uncles, a grandmother, an aunt, and a mother as a nurse midwife. That all changed when he met Emily, and ended up on graduation from undergrad going to Palmer College of Chiropractic with Emily.

Josh and Emily were paired as lab partners that rainy fall morning. Flash forward to 2014: husband and wife, Dr. Josh and Dr. Emily opened a Chiropractic clinic in the beautiful Crystal Lake community. They opened the clinic with a desire and purpose to help others and to provide hope and answers to those in need. The mission statement of Crystal Lake Family Wellness is to adjust, educate, and empower as many as possible, to reveal, express, and support their vitality from within: A chiropractic lifestyle.

Why:
