What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that slowly destroys memory, cognitive skills, and the ability to carry out simple tasks. It is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for an estimated 60-80% of cases. The disease usually affects individuals over the age of 65, but early-onset Alzheimer’s can develop in people as young as their 40s or 50s.
The disease is characterized by the buildup of amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain. These abnormal protein deposits disrupt communication between nerve cells and lead to cell death, causing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s to gradually worsen over time. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, though certain medications and interventions may temporarily improve symptoms or slow progression in some individuals.

⭐Falls and Safety: Protecting Older Adults from Injury⭐

The Scope and Impact of Falls Among Older Adults

Falls are alarmingly common among older adults. In fact, about one third of people aged 65 and older fall each year. These incidents are not only frequent but serious: falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalization and death among seniors. The consequences can range from minor bruises to major fractures, particularly of the hip, spine, and wrist. In some cases, falls can also lead to traumatic brain injuries, which may have lasting effects on cognitive and physical function.
Beyond immediate injuries, falls can trigger a downward spiral in quality of life. Fear of falling often leads to reduced physical activity, social withdrawal, and a loss of independence. This decline in mobility and confidence can further increase the risk of future falls, creating a vicious cycle that is difficult to break without intervention.

Let Florida Caregivers help your loved one stay safe and prevent falls.
