Does your child struggle with fine motor skills? This might look like difficulty stringing beads, coloring, placing coins into a piggy bank or tying their shoes. Or maybe they struggle with gross motor skills like catching a ball, swinging a bat, or crawling. If any of those sound like a familiar struggle, this post is for you!
Difficulty crossing midline might be the answer! As an Occupational Therapist, I always assess a reflex called the Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex - this is usually the culprit. Without boring you on "why", let me share with you a few exercise you can try at home to take a closer look for yourself! Draw a large figure 8 and have your child trace it; can they? Place a piece of tape, about 2’ long on the table and let your child drive a toy car from one end to the other using one arm look to see if your child moves their body in the direction they are moving the car OR if they try to switch hands. These are indicators that crossing the midline is a struggle for your learner. Call us today if you think your little one as a retained ATNR!
