Happy Lyme Disease Awareness month! Many patients still receive a 1 dose doxycycline prescription for prophylactic tick bite treatment. This is based on an outdated and probably incorrect 2006 Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) recommendation. More evidence-based and up-to-date studies recommend that a 10- to 20-day course of doxycycline is a more effective treatment strategy for most people. As always, discuss the risks and benefits with your medical provider. To help educate and train your medical providers to practice modern, evidence-based medicine here is a link to a review article discussing these guidelines. It's a short read, and your medical provider can answer a quick quiz to get Continuing Medical Education credit for reading it. (P.S. I just found out the CME expired but it's still helpful info for your practitioner.) Let's work together to help our providers practice better medicine!
