Posted this article on Linkedin earlier this week on our Nation's battle with heart disease and stroke. Since the creation of the Framingham Heart Study in the 1940's there have been highs and lows in how we've addressed this crisis.
Today however, especially following a pandemic, we are clearly losing the battle.

In this article I highlight the one key thing we've forgotten to address in our push to prescribe more pills.

David Dansereau is a physical therapist, stroke survivor, and co-host of the Know Stroke Podcast. After experiencing an embolic stroke in the fall of 2006, David dedicated himself to his recovery and getting back to the things he loves, including his family and long-distance running. Read our Q&A with David below and share your Hope Post-Stroke story here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfT6f-DlQ-vXzOa2p8JWxuJqzCN2pYJY_EORNFg-LIl6E8qgA/viewform?usp=sf_link

Q. What is a challenge you experienced and overcame during your stroke recovery?
A. One thing we know for certain is anyone who has experienced a stroke has a unique story to share because no two strokes are the same. My story of stroke recovery involved a hole in my heart, a marathon, and probably the biggest challenge (marathon aside) was returning to work and family life balance with three young children all under the age of eight at the time of my stroke.
Q. If you could go back in time to when you had your stroke and you could give yourself one piece of advice, what would that advice be?
A. Respect the emotional side of stroke recovery. The depression, post traumatic stress and “brain fog” that all come with an insult to the brain are real. Allow time to process what life after stroke means to you and be kind to yourself. I made the mistake in the first years after my stroke of covering up my feelings and not letting anyone know what I was experiencing inside. I needed to be a father and husband and put my physical energies into my recovery to get back some control over family and finances, and as a result I put on hold that part of my brain’s emotional needs early on. I would have gotten more help earlier if I could go back in time.
Q. Why is it important to have hope in the recovery process?
A. Hope is the foundation of recovery for sure, but hope is not a plan. You should absolutely keep the faith and hope that you’ll get through the challenges and the many boulders that a stroke certainly will put before you but equally as important you need a roadmap for recovery to navigate around those obstacles. I was lost and overwhelmed after my stroke honestly. It wasn’t until I took a step back and got clear on my personal roadmap to recovery that my path aligned with my mission.
Q. Is there anything else you'd like to share?
A. Where does running a marathon fit into my stroke story? Your own recovery might feel like a "marathon" right now. Your goal might be walking your child down the aisle someday, or getting back to living independently and caring for your favorite pet, or returning to the golf course with friends. Know that you can do it! I was lucky that I had my training as a physical therapist to provide myself with the rehabilitation knowledge and knew that neuroplasticity works only when it is fueled by repetition. Just the same, my path back started with telephone polls, not miles because I had lower extremity weakness and foot drop, fatigued easily, and as a result fell A LOT! With repetition however, the telephone pole markers eventually set me on a path to measuring my progress in miles and eventually to finishing the Boston Marathon twice since my stroke. Please reach out to me online at https://knowstroke.wordpress.com/contact-us/ to share your success! You can join me in the conversation, I’m a co-host on the Know Stroke Podcast.

The new remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) CPT codes from CMS went into effect in January 2022. These codes represent a significant step that the Fed is getting serious about digital care and truly moving towards and rewarding patient-centered healthcare.
I recently hosted a webinar on RTM and the room was sold out. Happy to announce I'm offering another replay session this week. Find out how to secure a ticket in this issue and get the bonus video I did on if PT practices are prepared for this move to digital enabled care! Great webinar yesterday discussing the new Remote Therapeutic Monitoring codes for Physical Therapists that will FINALLY pay for extending care outside the clinic walls. The webinar was full and we had some great questions that I'll be summarizing and offering a second session replay next week for anyone that missed the event. Thanks for those that attended, you should have your replay link and digital health guidebook if you stayed to the end I placed those links in the chat!

Stay tuned, new replay links will be posted next week!

The road back from a stroke for me included a recovery goal of setting my sights on someday returning to take on one of the biggest challenges again I had achieved before my stroke, running the Boston Marathon. This is why in part this post gives me such great pleasure, as along with my co-host Michael Garrow Enable_Us we welcome back Caroline Goggin (the intro voice of the ) back to the show with her husband Travis Eldridge. In this episode we were able highlight some of the difficult conversations and decisions young couples face when coming back from experiencing such a life altering event, a stroke. We really enjoyed this episode, especially as Travis was able to bring his experiences of the spouse as caregiver, and the grief and helplessness one goes through silently while supporting their own spouse. In this case, Caroline and Travis had only been married 3 weeks when they were faced with the challenges of balancing life after a stroke.

Coming full circle with this couple and following Caroline’s recovery journey, I can say it has been a pleasure to share their announcement in this this episode. They will be setting their sites on the Boston Marathon later this year in April as Caroline’s recovery journey takes the next step forward. In this soundbite you’ll hear Caroline talk about her progression in her recovery and setting sights on a marathon. This is important for all survivors to hear, as small steps can start a ripple effect that can lead to overcoming challenges and achieving bigger goals that you might currently feel are impossible. This is the theme of Season 3 of our podcast, finding your own why and achieving goals and it was so great to lead with Caroline and Travis to help showcase what is possible when you have a plan. My co-host Mike and I always say, every stroke survivor has a certain potential level for recovery. It is those survivors, like Caroline, that build the mindset they will “train like and athlete” and immerse themselves in their own recovery game play, that are rewarded with the best outcomes.

Please give this episode a play, and if you are moved by these discussions please share and please help them in their mission of raising stroke awareness and funds for Tedy's Team as well if you are able to help. The link to their persoanl fundraising page can be found in the show notes.

Thank you Caroline and Travis for sharing your stories!
