We were honored to spend time in Annapolis connecting with Mike McKay to talk about the work being done by Resources for Independence and the importance of supporting individuals with disabilities across our region.

Advocacy and collaboration with our state leaders are essential to ensuring people with disabilities have access to the resources, opportunities, and independence they deserve. We appreciate Senator McKay taking the time to meet with us and learn more about the impact of our programs in Allegany County and beyond.

Had an amazing time speaking at the Physical Therapy Assistant Program at ACM the other day!

We talked all about Spinal Cord Injuries and Disability Awareness—so important for future PTs to understand and advocate for their patients.

Feeling grateful for the opportunity to share, educate, and inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals! 🙌

❄️ Snowstorm Safety Tips for Independent Living ❄️

Snowstorms can be beautiful—but they can also bring challenges. Here are a few helpful tips to stay safe during and after a winter storm:

✅ During the storm

Stay indoors if possible and avoid unnecessary trips

Keep walkways clear only if it’s safe—don’t overexert yourself

Make sure you have essentials nearby: medications, water, snacks, phone charger

Check in with family, friends, or neighbors

✅ After the storm

Watch for ice on steps, sidewalks, and driveways

Wear shoes with good traction when going outside

Take your time—there’s no rush

Ask for help if you need it (that’s what community is for!)

Your safety comes first. Stay warm, stay connected, and take care of yourself—and each other. 💙☃️

🤔 Is Alexa considered assistive technology?

Yes—it can be!

While Alexa is often thought of as a smart home device, it can also serve as assistive technology by supporting independent living in everyday ways:

✅ Hands-free voice control
✅ Medication, appointment, and task reminders
✅ Making calls or sending messages
✅ Controlling lights, thermostats, and TVs
✅ Accessing information without screens or keyboards

For many people—especially older adults or individuals with disabilities—tools like Alexa can increase independence, safety, and confidence at home.

💬 Do you or someone you support use Alexa as an assistive tool? Share your experience in the comments!
