I have not posted in awhile. I hope this finds everyone healthy and doing well in these unprecedented times. Below you will find another reason to go to a Certified Hand and upper extremity therapist (CHT) We have the ability to fabricate custom splints that can improve range of motion and forego additional surgical procedures. Usually we get a run on seasonal sports injuries from baseball in spring, or football in the fall. Let me tell you I think we have the most fierce pickleball players in this area. We have about 5 on caseload currently. They cannot get enough of this game that I just recently found out about!!! Tag your pickleball friends here. We love your enthusiasm and we will get you back in no time!

I am beyond blessed to have wonderful therapists working with me. When I talk about Cortney Riden, OTR/L I could use so many adjectives... kind, thorough, compassionate. Despite her gentle nature, she is a fierce patient advocate and dedicated to continue improving the quality of care and her skills. Aside from our Specialized care of the upper extremity, Cortney is absolutely gifted in pediatrics. I received the following from a patient’s mother:

When I decided to have my 4 year old son evaluated at the Hand Institute, I was unsure of what we were dealing with, I just knew that something wasn’t quite right. He was unable to write well, struggled with fine motor skills, didn’t like to color, and struggled with color and number recognition. After the first evaluation with Cortney, I was so relieved I was in tears! She was able to figure out exactly what the issue was and reassured me that it was 100% treatable. She makes therapy fun and my child thinks he is going to play with a friend. He has been seeing Courtney once a week for 6 weeks and the difference is unbelievable. I now have complete confidence that he is going to be ready for kindergarten. Words cannot express my gratitude for Courtney’s patience, kindness, and skill.

Everyone loves Jared! You know you have the right people working with you when you go out and former patients express how awesome he was as a therapist and really want to know how he is doing.  Jared Adams COTA/L, focuses on conservative and post-op management of shoulder injuries, but being happy and positive is forte. Because of this, I made him stand beside our “quote of the day” here in the clinic. “There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way”

I’d like to just take a second to say I have the best staff working by my side. Today I want to give a shout out to Kailee Torbet COTA/L. A patient had been at another facility and the prefabricated splint was ill fitting and uncomfortable. It was also not supportive for the type of surgery. The patient called our clinic for help as we specialize in Upper Extremity. She took the call outside of regular hours to come in and fabricate a custom elbow hinge brace. He returned from Dr. Pensy in Baltimore today and told her that the Doc said the splint was fantastic and he wished everyone could splint like that! Experience Matters! Awesome job Kailee!!!

Anyone else that cannot wait for the day we can hug again? I had a patient today that defied seemingly insurmountable odds to regain full use of her dominant arm, and I was ecstatic! I wanted to hug her but I couldn’t. We miss seeing the expression on our patients faces too. Stay safe, a hug will be waiting for you when this is over!
