Congratulations to Northside Hospital Forsyth, recognized by Healthgrades as the #1 hospital for Joint Replacement for 2022. We are honored to be part of the total knee and joint replacement program at Northside Hospital Forsyth. Healthgrades rankings and awards determine and communicate a hospital’s superior performance when compared to other eligible hospitals.

To help consumers evaluate and compare local hospital performance specific to specialty service lines and specialty focus areas, Healthgrades analyzed and identified the top ranked hospitals in each state across eight key specialty areas for 2022. The Joint Replacement specialty award recognizes hospitals with superior clinical outcomes in total knee and hip replacement. The Joint Replacement specialty award is based on:

• Total Hip Replacement

• Total Knee Replacement

To be considered for an award in this specialty area, a hospital must be evaluated and categorized into one of three performance categories for both total knee replacement and total hip replacement. We evaluate both procedures based on in-hospital complications. The Joint Replacement award is based on a volume-weighted average of the z-scores for these procedures.

Northside Hospital Forsyth’s recognition as the #1 hospital for joint replacement highlights the efficiency of the hospital and healthcare staff, whose actual performance was better than predicted. Hospital are evaluated and stratified into three categories:

Better Than Expected – Actual performance was better than predicted and the difference was statistically significant at alpha = 0.1.
As Expected – Actual performance was not statistically significantly different from what was predicted at alpha = 0.1.
Worse Than Expected – Actual performance was worse than predicted and the difference was statistically significant at alpha = 0.1.

As a surgeon who treats osteoarthritis I find that many of my patients do not understand what osteoarthritis actually is. When you understand the problem, it helps you understand why so many people have hip or knee replacement. This video is a brief explanation of what is going on inside the joint when someone has osteoarthritis.

When Should Patients Consider Joint Replacement Surgery?

There are multiple factors in deciding when to consider joint replacement surgery. It is important that the diagnosis be correct. Some issues that can cause joint pain overlap with osteoarthritis. For example, hip pain is sometimes caused by a pinched nerve in the low back.

It is also important for the patient to try conservative measures before proceeding with surgery. In medicine, we are always weighing the risks and benefits of treatment. If a NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) or a cortisone injection can keep you going, in general there are fewer risks to these treatments and are often preferred. Taking on the risks of surgery begin to make sense once these simpler treatments no longer work.

The third, and perhaps most important consideration, is how the pain affects you. I always ask my patients what their pain keeps them from doing. For some people it is exercise or sports such as tennis or golf. For other patients it is shopping. For many it is traveling or working in the garden. If you find yourself giving up on the things you love to do because of arthritis pain, I highly encourage you to have a conversation with a surgeon about joint replacement options.

The right time to do a surgery is when you have exhausted the other treatments and the pain from the osteoarthritis keeps you from being yourself.

Call our office for a consultation. Together we can determine if surgery is the right choice for you.
