Your Mental Health Matters 🧠💛

Just as we check our physical health, it’s essential to pause and check in on our mental health, too.

Here are a few gentle questions you can ask yourself today:

💭 How am I really feeling right now?
💭 What’s been weighing on my mind lately?
💭 Am I being kind to myself?
💭 Am I making space for things that bring me joy?
💭 Who can I reach out to for support?

Your answers can guide you toward small actions—whether that’s taking a break, connecting with a friend, or seeking professional help. 💛

When I was drowning in my sandwich generation caregiving years, someone permitted me to put some attention back on my own life when they said, 'Your mom has already lived this stage of her life.' It was a short phrase and a reminder that I, too, have only one life to live, and my kids would only be x years old for that time in their lives.

I couldn't put my life on hold because life doesn't work that way - it keeps moving forward and will leave us behind.

This advice left a lasting impact on me and I have shared it with others.

What's some advice you received from someone that has stuck with you?

Even though P.K. Beville is considered an expert in psychology and gerontology, she still felt lost and overwhelmed as a dementia caregiver for her dad. P.K. is the founder of Second Wind Dreams, a pioneering nonprofit that fulfills dreams for older adults and champions dignity, hope, and joy in aging. She is the creator of the internationally acclaimed Virtual Dementia Tour®, a training tool that has helped millions better understand and care for those living with dementia. In 2023, she launched Empathic Transitions to support families during end-stage dementia and is currently certifying the first Dementia Doulas.

In this episode of the Happy Healthy Caregiver podcast, we talk about why caring for a loved one in any setting is still tricky, how the phrase ‘I wish’ sparked an uplifting non-profit in the older adult space, where we can find sources for humor and joy, and why the end-of-life experience for those living with dementia is different.

Thank you, Rare Patient Voice, for sponsoring this episode.

According to the latest AARP and NAC research, there are 63 million family caregivers in the US, and they need our support.

Maybe you have thought about helping other caregivers.

Ask me about how I got started, schedule a business coaching call with me, or inquire about the CCC and CSA certifications that helped me refine my business purpose, network with others, and establish expertise.

🚢 Self-Care at Sea Starts on Shore 🌊

Considering joining us on the Self-Care at Sea Cruise this October or have your own upcoming respite plans? The real voyage begins before you set sail — by arranging the right respite care for your loved one. 💙

Here are a few ways to ensure peace of mind while you’re away:

✅ Tap your support circle – Ask family, friends, or neighbors to rotate visits and check-ins. Maybe start a group text so they are all communicating together while you are away.

✅ Hire professional help – Consider in-home care or a short-term stay at a trusted facility. If you are a dementia caregiver, ask if they offer the GUIDE program which offers some respite relief.

✅ Leverage community resources – Some local agencies on aging, hospice organizations, faith groups, and caregiver networks often have respite programs.

✅ Prepare a “care binder” – Include medical info, routines, and emergency contacts so everyone is on the same page.

When you know your loved one is in safe hands, you can truly relax and recharge — guilt-free. 🧘♀️✨

Because self-care at sea isn’t selfish — it’s an investment in your ability to keep caring on land. 💛
