👶💜 Today is World Prematurity Day — a day to honor premature infants, their families, and the medical teams who support them from day one.
Premature babies often face unique health challenges, and pediatricians are the first to identify these concerns. When something requires specialized evaluation, they refer to for deeper assessment and care.
Ways ENT supports premature infants:
• 👂 Follow-up after abnormal newborn hearing screens — premature infants have a higher risk of hearing impairment, and ENT performs diagnostic ABR/OAE testing and long-term monitoring when pediatrics flags concerns.
• 😮💨 Specialized airway evaluation — pediatricians refer when babies show signs of laryngomalacia, noisy breathing, recurrent croup, or suspected structural airway issues that require pediatric ENT scoping or intervention.
• 👅 Feeding or swallowing difficulties with suspected structural causes — if pediatricians identify feeding challenges beyond routine newborn issues, ENT evaluates the airway and anatomy to pinpoint contributing factors.
• 👃 Recurrent ear infections or persistent middle-ear fluid — preterm infants experience higher rates of eustachian tube dysfunction, and ENT determines when advanced management or ear tubes are needed to protect hearing.
• 🗣️ Speech or breathing-related developmental concerns — when pediatricians observe delays linked to airway issues (such as chronic noisy breathing, airway obstruction, or past airway interventions), ENT provides specialized evaluation to support development.
