Cold air outside and dry heat inside can leave your skin feeling tight, itchy and uncomfortable. Here are some simple ways to protect and soothe your skin this winter:

• Moisturize often. Apply a thick, fragrance-free cream or ointment right after showering to lock in moisture.
• Keep showers short and lukewarm. Hot water strips your skin’s natural oils.
• Use a humidifier. Adding moisture to the air can help prevent dryness.
• Wear soft fabrics. Avoid wool or rough materials directly on your skin.
• Stay hydrated and eat well. A balanced diet helps nourish skin from the inside out.

Utica Park Clinic welcomes family medicine provider Karen Rackley, APRN-CNP! Karen brings three decades of experience to our Cushing clinic, and she's no stranger to the Hillcrest family. She's worked for Hillcrest for more than half of her career; patients may know her from her years of service in Cushing.

When Karen isn’t working, she enjoys volunteering with the local VFW Auxiliary, reading and crocheting. She adds, “I love making crochet surprises for coworkers and family. On occasion, I have even been known to donate crochet octopi to the local ER as a source of comfort for the children being seen.”

You’re not alone — these could be signs of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression linked to changes in seasons.

There are things you can try to ease the winter blues, like getting sunlight or using a light box, staying active, staying connected, and prioritizing sleep and routine, but sometimes you need to ask for help.
