Hi everyone:
I found out the truth about the Militaries SBP.
The SBP is the survivor benefits program that was supposed to be for the surviving spouses of Military personnel. The enlisted pay into the account so that their spouse would have money in the event that the enlisted spouse passes away after retirement, However the Military doesn't inform the enlisted that the SBP is just a way to allow the surviving spouse to collect only 55% of the monthly paycheck that the enlisted would receive monthly. You would think that the Military wouldn't deceive its personnel, but that's far from the truth. My father faithfully served for 23yrs. to include two tours in Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, Okinawa and many others. The bottom line is that the Military didn't explain that the SBP account is only to allow the 55% to the survivor, What they should have and should be informing the personnel is that there is another account that you could also put into that is similar to a retirement account or like a 401K program. It is a shame that my Mother and I found out today August 2024 that she will only get 55% of my Fathers pay each month and my Father had been paying into the SBP since 1970. One of the biggest issues is that she faithfully stayed by his side and retired with my Father and was given discharge papers to prove she was faithful to the Military and my Father in his absence over the many years. This is not something you should find out when you reach 80 + years old.
For all the Military personnel that have not been told the truth about their options for their spouses, please do yourselves a big favor and call the Defense Department and look into the retirement account that they didn't tell you about when you signed up, so that your spouse doesn't get left without a future; because of the despicable liars in the higher ranks of the Defense Department didn't want you to know about.
