Chlorella (Chlorella pyrelloidosa, C. vulgaris) - is often thought of as similar to spirulina, but it is actually an unrelated organism. It is a single-cell green algae that is high in protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. This “superfood” is widely touted as being able to chelate heavy metals and pollutants stored in body fat and enhance their excretion. This belief is based primarily on the ability of the live organisms in ponds to uptake lead and cadmium. There is little evidence that ingesting dried chlorella has any ability to promote elimination ofheavy metals or pollutants. There is one intriguing study where pregnant women took chlorella throughout pregnancy and had lower levels of dioxins in their breast milk.
Proven benefits of chlorella include reducing the risk of pregnancy-related anemia, proteinuria and edema, improving quality of life in fibromyalgia patients, and reducing blood pressure, cholesterol levels and symptoms in people suffering from ulcerative colitis.
