What Is EMDR Therapy and How Does It Work?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy for people of all ages, children, teens and adults who want to feel better, not just try harder.
Many people are told to change their behavior, calm down, or think differently. EMDR takes a different approach. Instead of focusing on willpower or repeated talking, EMDR helps rewire what the brain believes about past experiences, so emotions and reactions naturally begin to change.
When something overwhelming happens, the brain can get “stuck.” EMDR uses gentle bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or walking on the nature trail) to help the brain reprocess those experiences, allowing them to be stored in a way that feels less intense and no longer overwhelming. This is the brain doing what it’s designed to do, heal.
EMDR can be helpful for:
▫️Childhood trauma
▫️Anxiety and panic
▫️PTSD
▫️Grief and loss
▫️Attachment wounds
▫️Stressful or overwhelming life events
At Happy Camper Child and Family Therapy, we use trauma-informed, child-centered EMDR to support emotional healing for individuals and families. Our work is non-judgmental and inclusive, meeting each person where they are.
You don’t need to relive the past over and over and you don’t need to force yourself to behave differently. When the nervous system feels safer, change happens naturally.
Healing is possible even when experiences feel heavy.
