In 2018, Amanda Amat approached the director of the Tri-County Children’s Advocacy Center to talk about the potential of beginning the journey to become a facility dog handler. The board of directors and CAC staff not only welcomed the idea, but they went above and beyond to support Amanda during this journey. Two years later, Logan’s destiny was fulfilled when he was welcomed to the Tri-County Children’s Advocacy Center. Logan is a service trained facility dog from Canine Companions for Independence. Logan was specially trained by this amazing organization in order to provide comfort & support to child victims of abuse. Logan works to cover Chambers, Tallapoosa, Randolph, & Macon counties. Logan’s primary handler, Amanda Amat, is a therapist and forensic interviewer at the Tri-County Children’s Advocacy Center. Logan’s secondary handler, Kara Hall, is a victim service officer at the 5th Judicial Circuit of the District Attorney’s Office.

The overall purpose of the Tri-County Children’s Advocacy Center is to provide a safe and child friendly environment for children and their families to receive services, resources, and support throughout the journey towards healing and justice. Logan uses his commands and behaviors to specialize in assisting children during the stressful stages of forensic interviews, medical exams, counseling, and court hearings. Logan interacts with children by playing games and showing off some of his commands. Other times, Logan cuddles and provides a paw to hold in order to remind each child how brave and strong they truly are. Whatever the occasion Logan adapts to provide the individualized support that each child may need during this difficult time.

We cannot thank Canine Companions for Independence enough for all that they have done to make this possible. Canine Companions for Independence is an amazing organization that places these talented, caring and intelligent dogs free of charge with people and facilities where they provide support, comfort and joy to hundreds. Alabama is a very special state because it is the first to have a statewide facility courthouse dog program. The HERO Program stands for Helping Every Survivor Realize Their Opportunity and Strength. This program was inspired by an incredible dog named Willow. Willow’s impact led nine other facility dogs on their own journey to become part of the team. Together these facility dogs work together to offer services to child victims of crimes across the entire state of Alabama. Logan is beyond excited to join nine other four legged friends in Alabama working with the same mission as him! For more information, visit http://opsheroinfo.org
