As wildfires continue to devastate parts of the northern Canadian prairies, our hearts are with the many First Nations families and communities who have been forced to evacuate their homes.
The FEHNCY team sends our heartfelt support to our community partners at this time of uncertainty.

Please consider donating to national, regional, and local emergency response funds that are providing vital support, shelter, and supplies to evacuees.

The Canadian Red Cross is currently doubling (2X) donations through the Saskatchewan Wildfires Appeal and tripling (3X) donations through the Manitoba Wildfires Appeal.

Let’s come together in solidarity and support at this time of crisis.

The FEHNCY study is now complete in Miawpukek First Nation!

To celebrate, a final closing event with many families in attendance was held at the community center on January 30th. FEHNCY team members, Amy Ing and Lynn Barwin, shared final community results.

The fun event included delicious food provided by Loppy’s Landing Eatery, a kids table, and lots of prizes.

A huge WELA’LIOQ to Health Director Ada John and community researchers Maggie Organ, Elaine Jeddore, and Dan McDonald who made this project so successful!

And a special shoutout to Louise and Ron at Bennett’s B&B for warmly welcoming the FEHNCY team over the last few years!

Our Mission

The Food, Environment, Health and Nutrition of First Nations Children and Youth (FEHNCY) is a study designed to assess the food environments and food security, housing conditions and indoor air quality, environmental contaminants exposure, and health indicators for First Nation children and youth living on-reserve. Our overall goal is to promote the establishment of government policy and community programming recommendations focused towards the improvements of First Nations children’s health. The study will also assist in capacity building regarding nutrition and environmental health concerns within First Nations and Assembly of First Nations (AFN).

Over the last few decades, plenty of surveys have supported the existing disparities between the health status of the First Nations children and youth living on-reserve and the rest of the children and youth population in Canada. Yet, there is no significant data to relate the influences of socio-environmental elements on the healthy living of the First Nations children and youth. FEHNCY promises to address this knowledge gap by carrying a nation-wide study, comprising 50 randomly selected First Nations from the seven Assembly of First Nations (AFN) regions. To determine the impacts of food environments, food security and nutrition in the well-being of children and youth in First Nations communities and quantify child and youth exposure to environmental contaminants are key objectives of this study. Likewise, FEHNCY intends to study the relationship between housing conditions, Indoor Air Quality and health outcomes in children and youth. Also, by promoting community mobilization and intergenerational capacity building, the study encourages discussion of environment, food and nutrition with the children, youth and parents of the communities.
