It’s tax time again? The worst. Here’s a little snippet into the biz of an osteopath 🤣

I wash my hands, a lot, ok? And yes I happen to like crystals.

Obviously it’s all fun and games until my accountant tells me how much HST I actually have to pay back to the government and I gasp like I haven’t been in sole-biz ownership for more than 15 years. Fun times✌️

Obviously these numbers are fake, I haven’t done my taxes yet - and I didn’t want to put the real amount of money I spent on crystals this year🤣

I pull out all the snacks and toys when I treat patients who are super curious, active and slightly hesitant.

I’m checking the intricate way this little cutie breathes, and making sure her clavicles and upper ribs aren’t holding her back from taking a deep breath - while mom distracts her with a latch board and some puzzles! It takes a team effort in here sometimes but what even is my life! Getting to spend my days with all of you beautiful humans is a dream. ✌️

The feelings are PROFOUND! Intentionally providing infant care has consistently changed my perspective on life + osteopathy. Our little ones teach us all we need to know - if we are willing to listen.

There’s so much magic in being able to provide support for a developing little human. I’m so grateful for the parents that trust in me to support their little ones and believe in the practice of osteopathic care.

I’ve know this little babe since he was conceived! ✌️

Me when I read an email from a parent telling me her babe slept a solid night through after our appointment together. 👌

It doesn’t happen every time, I wouldn’t want to set that type of expectation. But our children are generally more stimulated now than they ever have been. Often our restful state, the normal state of our nervous system, feels like fatigue, when it’s really just our nervous system in a regulated state.

Sometimes teens are resistant to see me because of how “tired” they feel after. My recommendation is to always ride that wave, have a nap, and get used to feeling a little calmer.✌️

REST • we need more than just sleep to help our bodies regulate + digest. If we are only relying on sleep to do the job for us, we will never wake up feeling well and rested.

WHY?

Because our quality of sleep has vastly diminished - especially if you work overnight or have children. Woo! Adulting is FUN!

Five 5-minute hacks to get rest during the day:
•five intentional deep breaths outside, twice a day
•five minute meditation on
•humming a quiet tune to yourself
•closing your eyes for five minutes
•five minutes in child pose or waterfall

TRAUMA • there’s a reason why we can’t just reason our way out of post traumatic stress. The polyvagal theory exists to explain why the symptoms we experience after a stressful and traumatic event are experienced in our bodies somatically (or through our tissues).

We initially respond to stress through our social nervous system. If we can’t find safety quick enough, we respond with a fight-or-flight response. If the situation isn’t resolved through fleeing, we become immobilized through our dorsal vagal pathway, and experience symptoms like nausea, dizziness and fatigue.

If we can get to know our personal responses to stress, we have a higher chance of staying within our social nervous system, preventing a major stress response from happening.

How do you do that?
• self-compassion: be gentle, talk kindly to your symptoms
• learn to understand your symptoms: increased heart rate, weird gut feelings
• ground yourself: look for something in your environment that brings you comfort (light, colour), massage your own hand or use a certain smell to calm you

A few things about this Peterborough Osteopath:

• I grew up a country girl, building tree forts and chasing cows
• I suffered a traumatic brain injury when I was four
• I’ve traveled to over 40 countries
• I used to run marathons until I broke my right leg in 2017
• I’m an independent Mom to beautiful Della (3)
• I geek out on watching surgeries on YouTube and Osteopathic medicine
• I’m a cancer who goes with the flow of life, loves beautiful things (like crystals), and enjoys interior design, hiking, sunsets and being around my family & friends
