Our story
Sometimes, feelings suck. When feelings create isolation, self-harm, poor grades, interpersonal problems, or avoidance, counseling can help.
Counseling is a process by which individuals, couples and families can learn to manage life's challenges in order to achieve a greater level of identity, peace, and joy.
Our counselors help individuals of all ages, couples and families work through problems, gain emotional stability, learn effective communication, and learn to solve problems independently.
What to expect:
Our office is set up with a comfortable waiting room and a session room in the Sargent Building located on the square in Dahlonega, Georgia. Individual therapy consists of an intake and regular sessions to discover and process the presenting issues. For child or adolescent therapy, the family is expected to be involved in helping the child achieve a level of emotional intelligence and regulation that creates stability within the child. For couples counseling, your therapist may choose to meet individually and/or as a couple to reach the couple's relational goals. For family counseling, your counselor may choose to meet individually and/or as a family or with the parents in order to gain insight into the family dynamics and to achieve the family's goals.
Our approach to therapy is generally Person Centered, focusing on the strengths of the individual to work out problems and implement solutions independently. When working with children and families, we generally utilize Parent-Child Interaction Therapy techniques to lessen the conflict between the child and their care-giver and increase effective communication. We also regularly utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing to help clients recenter their feelings.
Clients generally experience some insight within the first few sessions and generally experience lessened negative symptoms such as anxiety and depression within three to five sessions, depending on the willingness of the client to engage in the therapeutic process. However, psychotherapy can be a very intense emotional experience and sometimes clients experience increased negative symptoms before they are able to manage emotions effectively.
