What is SMA?
✨SMA is a genetic disease that causes progressive muscle weakness and wasting, affecting the muscles necessary for activities like walking, breathing, and swallowing. It does not affect a person's intelligence or senses.
✨ Physical therapy is a crucial and effective part of managing spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) by improving and maintaining muscle strength, flexibility, and function, preventing complications like joint contractures, and enhancing overall quality of life.
✨Support Research and Care: Donate or participate in fundraising efforts to advance treatment and help support programs such as Cure SMA at https://www.curesma.org/about-sma/

Be aware of the risks of deconditioning during the colder months! ❄️

“Deconditioning occurs when a person is immobile for an extended period of time.”

Symptoms include but are not limited to:

- low energy
- loss of appetite

Deconditioning can affect multiple body systems including:
- Cardiovascular system
- Muscular skeletal system
- Respiratory system
- Nervous system and the brain

“If you think physical therapy is only about rehabilitation after surgery or recovering from an accident, think again. For the vast majority, seeing a physical therapist should be about prevention, routine assessment and staying well.”

“Even if you’re not having any problem, you go in and have everything checked out,”

“You can now visit a physical therapist in all 50 states without needing a referral from a physician or surgeon. That’s the good news.”

Most people think of physical therapy as rehabilitation. But many physical therapists want the profession to be seen as preventive medicine.

Due to inclement weather, the Botetourt County Administrative Offices at Greenfield, Botetourt County Office of Elections & Voter Registration, Botetourt Treasurer’s Office, and Botetourt County Libraries will be CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC on Monday, January 6, 2025. Recreation Sports Practices will also be cancelled. Residents and businesses can still conduct county business online at www.botetourtva.gov or by calling 540-928-2000.

Here are some important things to know about Winer Storm Blair:

-Botetourt County will see 3-7 inches of snow before the storm ends and could see 1/10 to ¼ inch of ice making roads and sidewalks/walkways slippery and dangerous. Temperatures are expected to reach 38 tomorrow.
-If you don’t have to be out on the roads, please stay home.
-If you lose power at your home, please use caution with generators and/or candles. Generators and fuel should always be used outdoors and at least 20 feet away from windows, doors and attached garages.
-Stay off roads if at all possible. If trapped in your car, then stay inside.
-Limit your time outside. If you need to go outside, then wear layers of warm clothing. Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
-Reduce the risk of a heart attack by avoiding overexertion when shoveling snow and walking in the snow.

We are keeping all of our first responders, 911 dispatchers and maintenance crews in our thoughts as they will be out serving our citizens and preparing our buildings. We want to thank them for their dedication to the community!

Stay tuned to US National Weather Service Blacksburg VA. Virginia Department of Emergency Management and VDOT Salem District for weather & road updates.

A Virginia bill recently passed (HB 2359) eliminates the requirement of a physician’s order for a patient to attend physical therapy with a certified direct access clinician. “The bill also allows licensed physical therapists to practice dry needling without a referral if they are licensed to practice dry needling.”
