“So what exactly do you do for a living?”

I am asked this question quite frequently! The beauty of audiology is that it is constantly evolving and there is SO much variety in our field that not many people know about. Audiologists are THE hearing and balance healthcare specialist! 🦻🏼🧑🏻‍⚕️

We are the primary health-care professionals who: evaluate, diagnose, treat, and manage hearing loss and balance disorders in individuals of all ages. This means in one clinic day, we could see an infant hearing test in the morning, and fit a 100 year old with hearing aids in the afternoon. Talk about variety!

Audiologists are also trained to understand and program hearing aids, cochlear implants, assistive listening devices, bone-anchored hearing aids, and more. Audiologists are the only qualified professionals who can diagnose an individual with an auditory processing disorder, or “hidden hearing loss" (audiology.org). 📝

Our office additionally specializes in [tinnitus, APD, hyperacusis, balance/vertigo, etc]. Feel free to call our office to learn more about what services our practice offers: [817-346-6000].

The origin of National Doctor's Day can be traced back to 1933 when Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a physician, thought that one day should be set aside to recognize all the work that doctors do for their patients. 🧑🏽‍⚕️

On this first observance, Eudora sent cards to several doctors and placed red carnations on the graves of deceased physicians who had been prominent in the community.

Over the past few years, we've seen so many brave men and women rise to the challenge, working in healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, we show special gratitude to physicians everywhere whose hard work and dedication keep their patients happy and healthy.

How can you celebrate your doctors? One way is to personally thank them for keeping you healthy! You can also give them greeting cards or the traditional red carnation, a symbol of this holiday. 🏵️🧑🏼‍

March Madness is in full swing!🏀

Did you know–sounds at some basketball games have recorded noise levels upwards of 109 decibels!! 📣📣📣

You risk noise-induced hearing loss in just 2 minutes when exposed to sounds at 110 decibels (dBA). So be sure to have your hearing protection handy if you plan to attend any games!

Typically, we say that the lifespan of your hearing aids is about 5-7 years. Why is that, and where do we get that range? 📅

While hearing aids can last much longer, typically there are significant improvements in hearing aid technology in that time. Also, manufacturers tend to phase out older hearing aid model parts after about 5 years. However, there are manufacturers that do special repairs for older hearing aids. Some audiologists have seen hearing aids that are 15+ years old!

Just like anything, the better care you take with your hearing aids, the longer they can stand the test of time. ⏳

Did you know that stress and anxiety can cause physical symptoms like dizziness? Our body responds to stress and anxiety by releasing hormones that can narrow blood vessels, make you breathe quickly or take shallow breaths, and raise your heart rate. These things can then lead to dizziness!

So take a deep breath, relax, and rest. Sometimes simply taking 5 can make all the difference.

“I truly didn’t hear what he said, but I worry he will think I have memory issues!”

Have you ever replied to someone’s question with a vague answer because you weren’t sure what they said? 🤔

Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Many patients with hearing loss misunderstand speech. In fact, misunderstanding is one of the first signs that you may have hearing loss.

Fortunately, hearing aids can provide the amplification you need to hear speech more clearly. So, why wait? Why not do everything you can to put forth your best self and give yourself every opportunity to engage, respond, and interact with those around you!

Patients sometimes ask, “What type of professional degree do you have as an audiologist?

To become an audiologist I attended Texas Christian University for four years and the University of North Texas for two, recieving my Masters of Audiology. Since I have graduated I have worked in the Fort Worth community for over 25 years.

You may also see other letters behind an audiologist's name, such as "CCC-A," "ABA," and "F-AAA". These are voluntary certifications for professional associations for the field of Audiology. This just means they go ABOVE and BEYOND! 🧑🏽‍🎓

Currently I hold CCC-A and F-AAA.

Recently, a patient shared with me the reason for her hearing aid purchase. She said that her sister, despite also having hearing loss, refused to wear hearing aids. Whenever her sister traveled, she'd ask others to accompany her. 👩🏼‍🤝‍👩🏽

During those times, my patient witnessed moments when her sister got confused or even boarded the wrong shuttle after mishearing the flight attendant.

“While traveling with my sister, I came to realize that her hearing loss put her in danger, ⚠️ and I didn’t want to be in the same position!”

This story motivated my patient to take action when confronted with her own hearing loss. If you want to learn more about your hearing and the services we offer, please do not hesitate to call us! We’re here for you wherever life takes you.

"Do I really need two hearing aids?"

If you have hearing loss in both ears, your audiologist will likely recommend two hearing aids (one for each ear). Our brain uses the sounds that we hear in both ears to make better sense of what we are listening to. When we get sounds from both ears, our brain does not have to work as hard to figure out the message! 🦻🏼🦻🏼

But, audiologists understand that sometimes two hearing aids might not work out for everyone, so talk with your audiologist to find the right solutions for you!

Sometimes, patients will ask me if their hearing aids will restore their hearing, and if hearing aids will prevent their hearing from getting any worse. 🤔

Hearing aids do NOT restore your hearing back to normal. As their name implies, they aid the auditory system and try to make it easier for you to hear sounds that you could be missing during everyday conversations. Hearing aids also will not cause your hearing to get worse, but that's not to say your hearing will not worsen over time. Luckily, your audiologist can routinely check your hearing and your hearing aids! 🦻🏼

“I remember my mom’s hearing aid used to whistle all the time. I couldn’t stand something like that!” 🦻🏼😖

When hearing aids whistle, it’s called feedback. Thanks to advances in technology, most hearing aids today have very sophisticated feedback suppression built into the software. That means whistling is not something a hearing aid user should have to deal with like they may have had to in the past!

"My primary care doctor told me my hearing loss is normal for my age, so I don't think I need hearing aids." 🦻🏼

Think about this - is arthritis normal? No.
Is it common for people to have arthritis when they're older? Yes.

Hearing loss is the same way. Is hearing loss normal? No.
Is it common for people to have hearing loss when they're older? Yes.

You don't have to just live with hearing loss because it's "normal for your age". If it is affecting your quality of life, there are solutions we can use to try and help! Call our office today if you are ready to schedule a hearing test [817-346-6000].

Face masks might be with us for a while. 😷 Wearing hearing aids and a mask at the same time can pose some problems. When removing the mask, hearing aids may fall off and get lost!

If you are having trouble keeping your hearing aids in place while applying or removing your mask, consider getting an “ear saver” to hold the mask loops off of your ears or using a mask that ties around your head and neck.

Have you ever asked someone to repeat what they said, and they start yelling at you? 📢

"Stop yelling! I can HEAR you, I just didn't UNDERSTAND you!"

You are not alone! This could mean that you have hearing loss in the high frequencies (aka high pitches). Many consonant sounds like S, F, K, are high-pitched, and they give us clarity and crispness in words. This can be the difference between "fat", "sat", and "cat." Three different words, three different meanings. If you mishear someone and mix up the words, then the whole conversation changes. Luckily, hearing aids can often help!
