Power Outages

Power outages, also called “blackouts” or “brownouts” are one of the most common interruptions to businesses. A short-lived power outage may be a small inconvenience, but a prolonged blackout can impact business operations and your bottom line. Prepare an emergency plan and supply kit to help get you through a blackout.

Prepare

Power outages can occur anywhere, anytime for various reasons; it is important to always be prepared. A good emergency kit includes plenty of batteries, flashlights, two-way radios, bottled water, and first aid supplies.

Take steps to protect your business and operations:

· Back up files and operating systems regularly

· Have backup power supply for any critical equipment or operation systems

· Have extra fuses for critical machinery

· Keep battery or crank-operated flashlights and radios

· Keep heating fuel on hand, in case outage is widespread or long-term

Respond
In the event of a prolonged power outage, keep yourself and your property secure.

· Turn off any appliances or equipment that were on when the power went out

· Leave on one light so you know when power is restored

· Avoid driving as traffic lights may be out and roads may be congested

· Carbon monoxide kills–use generators or camp stoves in well-ventilated areas

· Use food from freezer or refrigerator first, before it spoils

Recover
· If you have been without electricity for an extended period of time, your property may need extra attention as operations return to normal. Check water and food safety, and reset any timers, alarms, and equipment affected by the blackout.
