We want to bring your attention to a significant development from the Texas Medical Association (TMA) that may directly impact your practice.
TMA has joined a federal antitrust lawsuit against MultiPlan (now Claritev) and several major insurance companies including UnitedHealth, Elevance, Humana, Aetna, and Cigna alleging a coordinated scheme to underpay physicians for out-of-network services.
The lawsuit claims that MultiPlan facilitated pricing agreements among insurers that suppressed reimbursement rates, often resulting in payments that do not cover the cost of care. This alleged activity dates back to at least 2015 and may have affected physicians nationwide.
Key highlights:
• MultiPlan is estimated to process over 80% of commercial out-of-network claims in the U.S.
• Physicians may not always realize their claims were repriced by MultiPlan or its affiliated services (e.g., Data iSight, Viant, ProPricer, MARS)
• The lawsuit seeks to recover damages for past underpayments and stop alleged anti-competitive practices
Physicians who believe they may have been impacted either currently or in prior years have the option to pursue individual claims and can obtain a free case evaluation through court-appointed attorneys.
This case represents an important step toward ensuring fair reimbursement for physicians and addressing practices that may negatively affect both providers and patient care.
