Dame Cicely Saunders, born on this date in 1918, was the founder of the modern hospice movement and a pioneer in the industry.

Her legacy is still evident in hospital wards, care homes and hospices around the world and can best be summarized by one of her most famous quotes: “You matter because you are you, and you matter to the end of your life. We will do all we can not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die.”

Hospice Source Patient Care Associate Hugo regularly receives compliments from hospice care partners, patients and their families. Recent feedback speaks volumes for the level of expertise, skill and care he provides when delivering to those we serve:

=> "He knows his equipment, and it shows," a patient’s son-in-law recently said.

=> “He was very careful bringing in this bigger bed, setting it up and explaining all the details about the bed. We appreciate his help,” a hospice partner commented.

=> Another hospice partner told us, "Hugo is great with DME installments, is thorough in explaining how to use the DME, and he has great customer service skills. He is making a difference in our patients' lives during his deliveries.”

Thank you, Hugo! We appreciate your hard work, dedication and compassionate care to every patient every time!

Weather-related events cause power outages and other emergency situations that disrupt care for hospice patients. And so last month, Hospice Source provided an emergency preparedness in-service training for one of our partners in Austin. This training focused on backup oxygen and also covered low air loss mattress options.

Attended by both clinicians and the hospice partner CEO, this in-service provided necessary and valuable training. Thank you to our Austin site manager, Michael R., for providing an excellent demonstration of what to do in an emergency.

Compassionate care starts and ends with our people. Patient Care Associate, Dyshon M, is a great example of this. Here’s what a family member recently said about him:

“Dyshon was very professional. He always calls before arriving. There aren’t a lot of people in this world that would go above and beyond the way Dyshon did. Great employee! Just wonderful.”

Counselors who choose to work in the hospice field are a crucial part of the hospice care team. They support patients (and their loved ones) as they approach the end of life. Following the passing of a hospice patient, counselors continue to serve a patient’s family through bereavement support. During (and every month), we extend our gratitude to all of those who work in the mental health field, with a special thank you to hospice counselors.
