From the World Sleep Congress meeting in Rome, Italy

The Promise of FT218 Therapy for Narcolepsy Patients

How has sleep medicine changed in recent years, and what does the future hold? These are questions that are being asked this week at the World Sleep 2022 congress in Rome, Italy, and new data presented at the conference by Avadel Pharmaceuticals could provide a answers for patients struggling from narcolepsy.
A new post-hoc analyses for the sodium oxybate FT218 found that the therapy improved daytime sleepiness, sleep quality, and refreshing nature of sleep in patients with narcolepsy. It’s safety and efficacy was well established in the ongoing RESTORE study and the REST-ON trial, with participants receiving therapy for more than 18 months in the former.
In an interview with HCPLive, Michael J. Thorpy, MD, director of the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center at Montefiore and professor of neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, spoke of the implications of FT218 data in the realm of narcolepsy research.
“FT218 is a new formulation that allows for the drug to be given with a single dose at the beginning of the night,” said Michael Thorpy. “So, patients don't have to wake up to take a second dose.”
A new drug application for FT218 is currently under review by the FDA, which is supported by positive efficacy and safety data.
Though Thorpy did not know when the therapy would be approved, he was already willing to look towards the future regarding FT218 treatment for pediatric populations with narcole“One of the things about narcolepsy is at the median age of onset of narcolepsy of 16 years, so that means that half the population actually develops before the age of 16,” Thorpy said. “So I'm hoping that the company would look at it in children, because oxybate when it’s taken twice at night is available for children from 7 years and up. So, I'm hoping that this company will consider doing a pediatric study so that we can get everyone treated with even children.”

To Our Patients:

This is a courtesy message to all of our patients regarding the recent news regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19). We understand that our patients may be concerned about coming in for their appointments; however, we will continue monitoring health agency recommendations and will take action as warranted. FutureSearch will remain open for medical research. With the news about COVID-19, we would like to inform you of the extra precautions we are taking to protect our patients and staff:
•We are asking patients to complete a screening questionnaire via telephone before they arrive to their appointment. We are rescheduling appointments if the screen reveals a significant risk of infection or infection exposure.
•All patients will be quickly taken to an exam room to help meet the CDCs recommendations for social distancing.
•Should anyone arrive with symptoms suggesting COVID-19 infection as identified by the CDC, they will not be admitted to our office and will be asked to reschedule when they have recovered. We have increased our vigilance and frequency of wiping down our office using CDC recommended disinfectants.
•Our team members are being vigilant about their own health and will stay home if ill or have been exposed to COVID-19 and will contact their primary care physician to determine if they are safe to return to work. None of our staff are showing symptoms of COVID-19, however are self-monitoring their temperature and overall health.

We are asking the following of patients:
•If you or anyone in your household or recent contacts has respiratory symptoms or a fever, please do not come into the office. Please call 214-369-2600 to reschedule.
•If you have traveled in the past two weeks to a foreign country, please do not come into the office. Please call to reschedule. If you have traveled within the United States, please contact our office to discuss your travel with one of our physicians.
•We are encouraging patients to make use of our hand washing facilities and have hand sanitizer in each room.

It is important to us that you are comfortable continuing to receive care through our organization and maintain your appointments. We will do everything we can to keep you and your family safe.

Please stay safe and healthy during this pandemic. Practice frequent hand washings and cover your nose and mouth with a tissue if coughing. Avoid touching your face. If you have traveled to countries designated as Level 3 Health Notice country by the CDC, please stay home for at least 14 days from the time you left the area and self-monitor.
