I came up with this chart to try to simplify the process of decay in a way people never hear.

Cavities don’t come from just one thing… they happen when three problems show up at the same time.

1. Weakened enamel
Your tooth loses strength… from diet, low minerals, or poor saliva.

2. Bacterial imbalance
The wrong bacteria take over… often from mouth breathing, diet, or transmission.

3. Acid
Those bacteria create acid… and that’s what actually breaks the tooth down.

Cavities form right in the middle of all three.

So brushing alone won’t fix this… because it’s not just a hygiene issue.

What we focus on instead…
Strengthening the tooth… balancing bacteria… and changing the environment so decay can’t keep happening.

That’s how you actually stop the cycle.

Not every “behavior issue” starts in the brain… some start with how your child breathes.

I’ve had many parents sit in my chair feeling confused…
their child is struggling with focus, sleep, or behavior - and they’ve been told it’s “just how they are.”

But when we look a little deeper, a different picture starts to form.

If your child isn’t breathing well at night, they’re not getting the deep, restorative sleep their brain and body need.
Instead, their system stays in a subtle fight-or-flight state - working all night just to keep the airway open.

And that doesn’t stay in the bedroom.

Neither are you alone.

We see this often in moms and women going through hormonal shifts like postpartum, perimenopause, pregnancy, or cycle changes.

They’re brushing, flossing, even improving their routine… and still noticing inflammation or sensitivity.

One of the most overlooked reasons is hormones.

When estrogen and progesterone shift, they don’t just affect mood or energy - they also change your oral microbiome, saliva composition, and how your gums respond to bacteria.

So what looks like a “gum problem” is often a whole-body signal.

A parent recently asked why their child’s tongue still felt tight even after a release.

During our Wellness Coffee last month, Dr. Alex had an interesting perspective: Think about tight hamstrings. A few people are born with genetically short hamstrings. But most people feel tight because their pelvis, posture, or low back are out of balance. If you only cut the muscle without fixing the mechanics… the tightness comes right back.

The tongue can work the same way. Yes, sometimes there is extra tissue that truly needs to be released. But sometimes the issue is functional. The tongue isn’t moving well because the airway, muscles, posture, and nervous system aren’t working together the way they should. That’s what some providers refer to as a functional tongue tie.

When we look at the whole system instead of just one piece, families often get better answers and better outcomes. If you’re a parent navigating tongue tie conversations, this is an important perspective to understand.

It means paying attention, asking better questions, and supporting the body the way it was designed to grow.

Small shifts, like:

- Improving nasal breathing
- Evaluating tongue function
- Creating space for proper jaw development

→ can have a ripple effect on your child’s sleep, behavior, and overall health.

The earlier we catch these signs, the more gently and effectively we can guide things back on track.

Most people think magnesium is only about sleep.
But it has a much bigger role in the body than that … and yes, that includes oral health too.
