Happy Halloween! CPR training dummies would make for some scary torsos.

‘Tis the season! Happy Holidays to all. This crazy year is almost up and there is light at the end, no matter how dim it may seem at times.

👏👏👏👏👏 Lawrence Wong

It’s an honor to be recognized as one of D magazine’s best dentists. Will there be an asterisk to indicate that we didn’t work March through May? 🤷‍♂️

We’re still closely following the COVID-19 crisis in our community as well as our nation. The current recommendation by health authorities and dental associations is to stay closed to routine and elective dental procedures until at least April 21st. This date is only tentative at this time.

In the past two weeks, we’ve seen a handful of emergencies and want to remind you that we are available to help. However, anything that can wait until April 21st should be postponed.

We are experiencing the same PPE shortages and have avoided ordering anything to keep the flow to the hospitals that truly need them at this time.

We will be in touch with everyone who had cancelled or upcoming appointments as soon as it becomes clear that we can safely reopen and return to normal operations. It is unclear when exactly that will happen, and what new safeguards will be put into place.

In the meantime: please stay home, stay safe, and stay healthy.

- Lawrence Wong, DMD and the team at The Dentist On Skillman

We are only seeing patients for emergencies and urgent care needs. Many dental related problems end up at the emergency room, and now is not the time to place extra burdens on ER departments.

Please refer to this publication for the ADA guidelines on what constitutes an emergency or urgent need for dental treatment:

Emergency care:
- Diffuse swelling that may compromise airway
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Facial trauma that may compromise airway

Urgent care:
- Tooth pain (not brief sensitivity)
- Localized swelling with or without pain
- Delivery of final crown/bridgework only if temporary crown/bridgework is lost, broken, or causing pain.
- Wisdom teeth pain and/or swelling
- Tooth fracture resulting in pain or causing trauma to gum tissue
- Trauma that results in a tooth out of its socket, or bent from its normal position
- Dental treatment that is required prior to critical medical care
- Denture adjustments/repairs

Unfortunately, all other needs will be postponed until at least April 1st, 2020.

Please take care,
Lawrence Wong, DMD

Following guidance from health authorities as well as the Texas Dental Association, our office will be closed for the remainder of March.

There will be staff at the office to answer the phone. Emergencies will still be screened, scheduled, and treated.

We feel that the need to limit personal interactions is necessary to slow the spread of this crazy pandemic, and to protect our patients and staff. The sooner we all make these sacrifices for the good of our community and nation, the sooner we will have a resolution.

In order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, we are disinfecting the common areas of the office on a regular basis on top of our regular protocols for disinfection and sterilization. This is standard for the flu-season as well.

However, if you are experiencing possible flu-like symptoms, please call our office and we will help reschedule your visit. The ultimate goal is to prevent and slow down community spread to vulnerable patients. We will continue to be of service as long as we’re healthy and able to do so!

Bridge pontics float over the gum tissue where the missing teeth used to be. They don’t have to be oversized or oddly shaped to meet the gum tissue. Halloween Treats That Aren't Candy - American Dental Association

“I got so many packs of floss this Halloween!” - said no one ever.

Other Halloween tips:
- Sticky sweets are the worst.
- Swish around some water after enjoyig treats, and brush+floss thoroughly before bed.
- Careful with crunchy/hard treats on any temporary dental work.

Sonicare, Oral-B, Quip electric toothbrush comparison

I get so many questions about brands of electric toothbrushes, so here’s a short video on the pros and cons of the ones I’ve used myself.

Sonicare Diamondclean
Oral-B Pro 5000

There’s nothing wrong with the regular, manual brush as long as it’s used properly. However, some patients need additional power to help clean tough areas in the back or along the gumline.

All three brushes have timers to get you to the recommended 2 minutes of brushing.

Sonicare Diamonclean and Oral-B Pro 5000 have multiple cleaning modes, and pressure warnings to avoid brushing too hard. Glide these around the teeth and gums. There’s no need to scrub as you would with a manual brush. There’s also an app to help analyze your brushing which you could share with your dentist or hygienist.

Quip requires you to use it like a manual toothbrush. Compact and great as a travel brush.

Dental hygienist donates kidney to patient

In the midst of all the bad news lately, this is a feel-good story worth reading.

Dental hygienist donates kidney to patient A lot of people complain about trips to the dentist. Not Tim Buckley. At least not anymore. Buckley, 62, of Eau Claire, credits a dental appointment with saving his life. The unusual story began last May as Buckley was dealing with the progression of a hereditary condition called polycystic kidn.....
