Trauma from disasters affects more than just those directly in harm’s way.
According to the Chonnam Medical Journal (2020), people experience trauma at different levels based on their exposure:

- Primary Victims – Those directly impacted: survivors, local responders, and residents in the trauma zone.

- Secondary Victims – People indirectly affected, such as close community members or responders who weren’t in the immediate area.

- Tertiary Victims – Those connected by location (nearby) or by emotional ties (psychological proximity), even if they weren't physically present.

Understanding these layers helps communities respond with care and compassion—because trauma doesn't follow simple boundaries.

The emotional impact of natural or human-made disasters can stay with people long after the event is over. That’s why both immediate and ongoing mental health support are so important.

One proven method for healing from trauma is EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). It’s a structured approach that helps many people process and move forward from overwhelming experiences.

Seeking help is a sign of strength—and healing is possible.

Recovery from disaster trauma happens in phases—and each brings its own emotional challenges.
According to the National Center for PTSD, healing from a disaster isn't linear. People and communities often move through four stages:

- Phase I – Impact:
Immediate reactions like fear, shock, helplessness, and anxiety are common.

- Phase II – Immediate Rescue:
Emotions may include numbness, denial, confusion, grief, flashbacks, sadness, and even anger or despair.

- Phase III – Intermediate Recovery:
There can be a strong spirit of helping others—but also feelings of disillusionment as the reality sets in.

- Phase IV – Long-Term Reconstruction:
Communities begin to rebuild together. But if support and unity are missing, stress can linger or worsen over time.

Healing takes time, support, and community. No one has to navigate it alone.

Trauma doesn't just affect individuals—it impacts entire communities.

When disaster strikes, the sense of safety can be shaken for everyone, not just those directly involved. Communities feel the ripple effects together, emotionally and psychologically. (Norwood, Ursano, & Fullerton, 2000)

“Initially, we will not have the energy to initiate leisure. However, it is something that once you decide to do it, stop avoiding it, will give you more energy, inspiration and overall health. Sometimes, you just have to do it, choose the arduous good.”
