I'm sure when we were younger, we all read the book "Are you my Mother?" where the little hatchling leaves the nest before imprinting on his mum and spends the book looking for her. 🦆
This is usually the kind of imprinting we are all aware of.

But did you know that our babies undergo a form of imprinting where their primal experiences lay down neural pathways forming the basis of how they experience life – from a base of fear or connection. 🤯🤯🤯

This means that all of the experiences you go through in pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum have the ability to imprint on your baby and change how their brain develops and responds to stress triggers, as well as other external stimuli throughout their life.

We have become so complacent about birth that we just accept the role of technology and medical interventions in our birth space. We know they cause us great stress and trauma, yet we accept unnecessary interventions as being par for the course rather than looking at them as the godsend they are...when we need them for true medical emergencies.

But what if we start to look at the trauma they're causing our babies. What if we acknowledged that it's not just us being traumatised, but our precious little bebes who will grow up changed by their birthing experience. Then do we start thinking about medical interventions differently?

For me, this sounds like a pretty good reason to do a deep dive into birthing without interventions!

Some questions to mull over...

Is it just a coincidence that rates of anxiety, depression and other mental health issues have all risen in line with the prevalence of birth interventions?

What about the levels of drug and alcohol use in society...do they correlate with the use of numbing medications and interventions in birth? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

How has your birth experience imprinted on you?
Do you know? Have you thought about it?

Are you a forceps baby that now has trouble completing tasks because you feel like you get stuck or hit a wall before you finish? Or maybe you had a restrictive nuchal cord and now can't stand tight clothes or collars?

Coincidence? 🤔

4 out of 10 birthing parents deliver with Medicaid as their insurance but Medicaid ends within 60 days after birth in more than half of US states. Their partners are not provided coverage of any kind.

With almost 20% of birthing parents and almost 10% of partners suffering from perinatal mental illness, many of which are not diagnosable before 3 months, this means a very large percentage of new parents are left with no way to afford mental health care.

𝐏𝐫𝐞-𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐖𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬: 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐱𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬 🌊

It is common to experience warm-up pressure waves during the last half of pregnancy known as “Braxton Hicks contractions”. These are sporadic uterine waves that tone and increase coordination of the uterine muscles in preparation for birth. Though not everyone can feel them, many of those who do say they experience a tightening feeling or “like a balloon being inflated in my belly”. These warm-up waves may be very slight and other times very powerful, and they can vary with your activity. Some may not even notice them at all. These periods of warm-up pressure waves before birth are often referred to as “false labor”, but there’s nothing false about them! We tend to think of them as warm-up exercises for your uterus, so they're definitely a good thing.

Pressure waves that continue for a few hours without leading directly into the birthing time are called pre-birth waves. These waves prepare the body and position the baby for childbirth. Towards the end of pregnancy, pre-birth waves tend to occur more frequently. Until the last few weeks of pregnancy, these waves will probably remain infrequent, mild, and irregular. Some people find they get more pressure waves when they're dehydrated, so be sure to drink plenty of water, especially as your guess date approaches.

Sometimes in the hospital setting it’s more failure to wait than “failure to progress.” Many OBs are quick to tell a mom that she can’t push her baby out when what she needs is more time.
