In this article and accompanying video, 2 experienced surgeons, , and discuss the upper body lift procedure through a moderated discussion. The goal of this article is to elucidate the similarities and differences between the surgeons’ guiding principles and specific approaches to this procedure.

Topics covered in this discussion include indications, intraoperative sequencing, male chest, brachioplasty, closing technique, postoperative complications, and the typical postoperative course.

Posted • We are delighted to have a world-class plastic surgeon, Prof Al Aly presenting his experience in body contouring following massive weight loss. 


Dr Aly is a professor of plastic surgery and Director of Post Bariatric Plastic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. He is considered a pioneer of body contouring after massive weight loss. 


He published the first textbook on post-bariatric plastic surgery entitled “Body Contouring After Massive Weight Loss”, which is considered the “bible” on the subject. In addition, he has lectured and performed surgical demonstrations in over 35 countries. As a result, he is regarded by many as the world’s foremost authority on plastic surgery after massive weight loss. 


He is the body contouring section editor for the Aesthetic Surgery Journal and past associate editor for the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Journal. 


He is past and originating Editor-in-chief of the Plastic Surgery Educational Network (PSEN). In addition, he is the past president of the Aesthetic Surgery Education & Research Foundation (ASERF). 


Dr Aly has received the “Lockwood Award”, the most prestigious award given by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (currently The Aesthetic Society) to surgeons that have made significant contributions to the field of body contouring.
