A somewhat horrifying statistic from the newest Dyslexia Handbook. I say it's horrifying, because it is a common occurrence for children to be identified AFTER eight. We need to do better.

Early identification is critical. The earlier the intervention, the easier it is to remediate.

So often we focus on reading disabilities and dyslexia. While I’m SO happy that we are identifying this as a need, there can also be learning disabilities within math and writing as well, which are often overlooked.

Learning Disabilities can be in 3 areas:

1. Impairment in reading (accuracy, rate/fluency, reading comprehension)
2. Impairment in written expression (spelling accuracy, grammar and punctuation accuracy, and clarity or organization of written expression)
3. Impairment in mathematics (number sense, memorization of arithmetic facts, accurate or fluent calculation, accurate math reasoning)

Maybe we’re the step that helps you get to where you or your child wants to be. Our kids feel the struggle too.
They feel the disconnect between what they want to do, and what they’re able to do. Sometimes kids just need to know they’re valid in their feelings/struggles/inability to focus, etc. When they hear a diagnosis, there is often a sense of relief. Kat and Jennifer have been doing this long enough to see that sometimes the change within the child is immediate. They often feel heard, validated, and hopeful, just simply knowing there’s a reason.

MEET KAT!

Katherine (Kat) is originally from Austin, grew up in San Antonio, and has happily landed in Dallas. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University. Kat taught special education as well as first grade for five years before making the decision to stay home with her children. After welcoming her third child, she went back and obtained her master’s degree in education as well as completing her diagnostician certificate. Kat has three children, whom she considers to be her greatest accomplishment. She enjoys traveling, baking, and crafting. She is passionate about helping children find their stride and using their strengths to offset their weaknesses.

Our goal is to normalize ‘different.’ It’s okay to have ADHD. It’s okay to have anxiety. It’s okay to be dyslexic. It’s okay to have all three. Different is okay. We like different over here!

A diagnosis should not feel like an insurmountable obstacle. It should not feel painful to the child or the parent. It should feel like knowledge ….or a deeper understanding of how your child learns and thinks. It should provide direction to find what they need in order to be successful in life and in the classroom. If your child has a diagnosis, and you don’t feel empowered to find success, we should talk!
