Today, on Veterans Day, I want to take a moment to honor each of you who has served our country. As a psychiatrist—and as the child of a military family—I am deeply honored and humbled by the trust you have placed in me as your doctor. Every day, I am reminded of the courage and resilience you’ve shown not only in your service but in seeking care for the unique challenges that often follow.

I recognize the mental health struggles that many veterans face. Conditions like PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other trauma-related symptoms are far too common among those who have dedicated their lives to protecting ours. Seeking support is a brave step, and I am here to work alongside you, providing the specialized care you deserve.

Your commitment to healing, your strength in the face of challenges, and your trust in me inspire my commitment to serve you fully. I will continue striving to do my very best to support you on this journey.

Today, in addition to my private practice, I am honored to step into the role of Psychiatry Clerkship Director for the Texas A&M University School of Medicine Dallas campus. I follow in the footsteps of someone who has deeply inspired me - Dr. Sidney Kelt, who was my own clerkship director during medical school. He retired yesterday, leaving a legacy of compassionate and excellent patient care. He set the standard for what it means to be a dedicated psychiatrist and educator. I’m grateful for the impact he’s had on my life and career, and I will strive to continue his legacy by inspiring and educating the next generation of psychiatrists.

Meet our member and new DCMS board member Aekta Malhotra, MD, MS!

Dr. Malhotra is a psychiatrist in private practice at Apollo Psychiatry in Plano, TX. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology and master’s degree in Applied Cognition and Neuroscience from the University of Texas at Dallas. She attended the Texas A&M College of Medicine, where she earned her MD degree. Thereafter, she completed her General Adult Psychiatry training at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

In her private psychiatric practice, she focuses on treating adult patients while incorporating both psychodynamic psychotherapy and medication management. Her practice focus is treating other physicians and mental health professionals.

In addition to her private practice, she is an organizational consultant, focusing on the psychodynamics of leadership and groups to guide organizational diagnoses and culture change.
