Sharell Weeams - Heart Health Advocate Heart attack, cardiac arrest and open heart surgery survivor advocating for heart disease prevention and intervention. I got to join the exclusive 10% club.

CPR & AED Education Champion | Speaker | Storyteller | 2023 AHA Go Red for Women Class of Survivors Did you know that 90% of people who experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital don't survive? At the age of 42, on November 6, 2021 my heart stopped on the dance floor. I suffered a heart attack that caused my heart to go into ventricular fibrillation (an arrhythmia) that then caused my heart t

o go into cardiac arrest. However, due to 3 quick thinking bystander dancers, who happened to be nurses, I got immediate CPR and shocks from an AED. Two days later, I had open heart surgery -- a quadruple bypass due to cholesterol clogged arteries. Although I'm genetically pre-dispositioned to have higher cholesterol, my heart attack & cardiac arrest could have been prevented, or at least prolonged. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States

Now I'm on a mission to share my story and the importance of learning CPR, as well as increase heart health awareness to encourage you to make the commitment to take charge of your own heart health, and the health of those you love. It's National Wear Red Day! And I’m remembering and honoring all the lives touched by heart disease. Within the past month, the Swing dance community lost more dancers to heart disease.

Friendly reminder to please get your numbers/ heart checked and do what's within your control to take care of yourself.

I'm excited to share that my story with BlackDoctor.org has gone live. BlackDoctor.Org is the world’s largest and most comprehensive online health resource specifically targeted to African Americans.

The article underlines the importance of CPR and AED use, as well as understanding family health history.

“... If I had known what she knew, I would have approached my high cholesterol differently.”

What an honor it was to share my survivor story and participate in a CPR training at the Miss Texas USA 2024 event, in partnership with the American Heart Association. These young ladies were lively, confident, and eager to learn more about how to do CPR and use an AED. I walked away with a full heart knowing that with more young people like them, our future is bright and our lives are in good hands! ❤️

Let's Talk About LDL Cholesterol... I've been volunteering on the American Heart Association's Cholesterol Patient Advisory Commitment to provide input on ways to better educate the general population and heart attack survivors on how to lower cholesterol levels.

They've recently launched a new LDL eModule that helps clear up a lot of controversy surrounding cholesterol. I just completed the eModule and it's filled with so much valuable life-saving information. It only takes 10-15 minutes to complete. Definitely check it out and feel free to share this resource with others!

A friend recently asked if I ever get tired of sharing my story. My immediate response was "No!" because I feel like God put it on my heart, but upon reflection, sometimes I do. I've told it so many times that I sometimes wonder if there is anything new to offer. However, I've realized that each writer/producer has a different perspective, and always seem to pull out different parts of my story that haven't been shared before. Like, in a recent interview conducted with the American Heart Association for the "Lower Your Cholesterol" section of their website.

This brief article shares a part of my story I've wanted people to hear but hadn't been published yet. The beginning of my heart journey - in finding out that I had high cholesterol - and how simple changes could have helped me avoid (or delay) having a heart attack.

This is the ugly side of my story - the part where I get to take full ownership in what eventually led to having a heart attack. I could be ashamed or embarrassed, but I'm not because I'm human, and unfortunately so many people make the same mistake. I hope by sharing this part of the journey, someone else will do the things I wasn't willing to do and reduce their risk of having a heart attack.

One of my biggest post cardiac event blessings has been the ability to partner with the national American Heart Association, regional American Heart Association - Texas, and national and local Go Red for Women initiatives. Being apart of projects and events that I know are making an impact and saving lives fills my heart with so much gratitude and joy.

One project I worked on was filmed back in February in partnership with another survivor and a couple of physicians/advocates. I got to watch the video today (April)… and let’s just say it had me in tears - in the middle of a restaurant. So beautifully put together. 👏🏾👏🏾

I can’t share the video publicly yet because it’s being released throughout the county at individual Heart Ball events. However, I’ll be sure to come back and share it as soon as I can. 🙏🏾❤️
