Meet Laura Sheppard, MS, CCC-SLP!

We asked Laura how she became interested in working with people who stutter, "I became interested in working together with people who stutter after I met a 10 year old girl who stuttered. We explored the therapeutic relationship as a safe place to talk about talking. This experience fueled my commitment to delve deeper into the intricacies of stuttering, driven by a desire to enhance my clinical skills and extend meaningful support to a broader community of individuals navigating the varied impacts of stuttering."

What does the Spero Ally of Stuttering™ Seal mean to Laura?

"My decision to become an Ally of Stuttering™ is driven by a deep commitment to expanding my knowledge and skills in the area of stuttering therapy. The innovative mission of Spero, which focuses on connecting clients and families with SLPs dedicated to stuttering, resonates with my passion for making a meaningful impact. I am excited to be part of a community that values continual learning and growth, recognizing the dynamic nature of stuttering therapy."

Caitlin O'Brien Shanley is an energetic and passionate human being. Thanks for all that you do for your students and for your SLP colleagues, too. You are inspirational!

The length of Shanley’s run corresponded to the chromosomal abnormality of Down Syndrome.

🗣Average age children learn to pronounce English consonants correctly ⁣
💬 Based on 15 English speech acquisition studies compiled by McLeod and Crowe, 2018.⁣
💬A speech evaluation not only uses norms like these listed, but looks at the whole child and their communication needs.⁣
💬 "When should a child develop the /r/ sound" is a very common question from parents. While this data should not be looked at in isolation, it is extremely helpful when deciding if speech therapy support could be a helpful tool or added support for your child's speech development.⁣

Always learning, always growing!⁣

🌟Enjoyed attending presentation on all things MINIMAL PAIRS.⁣
🌟 Thank you and for a wonderful lineup!⁣

🗣 What is minimal pairs therapy? (all of the following amazing information provided by Rebecca Reinking, SLP)⁣
- An intervention approach for children with 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. e.g., Weiner (1981) and Blache, Parsons, and Hymphreys (1981)⁣
-Minimal pairs 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀 vs. individual speech sounds. e.g., look at Stampe's (1979) theory of natural phonology⁣
-Minimal pairs therapy aims to 𝗿𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 a child's linguistic system by 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 that your child produces the same, but have different meanings. Word pairs typically differently by one sound or feature.⁣
-We take the words that are produced as homonyms (e.g., "nail-snail" are produced as "nail-nail"), and we help the child realize that they have to 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 so that we understand them.⁣
