The Back-Shu (Shu俞) points are a little different than a lot of other acupuncture points. Instead of accessing the organs through the meridian, these points more directly affect their associated organs.

The biomedical mechanism of the Back-Shu points involves skin receptors, which send information to the dorsal root ganglion of the spinal cord. Treatment can reduce the hyperactivity of sympathetic visceral motor signals and activate the central nervous system.

They’re often used clinically in cases of chronic disease but can have some benefit in acute cases too.

I love the elegance of traditional medicine. For thousands of years, doctors have known that it works. Through the lens of modern-day neuroanatomica discoveriesl, we’re learning more and more all the time about HOW it works.
