LONG POST ALERT:
MY DYING patient’s spouse told me that her neighbor stopped and he questioned her about the little black lady she was hugging... (They are Caucasian and live in a well to do neighborhood where you don’t see many minorities or people of color)
See, the other day I visited the patient as he was actively transitioning. After the visit his wife thanked me, hugged me and walked me to the door. She then followed me outside to see me safely to my car.
As we stood in her front yard, she then embraced me tearfully with another full on hug and squeezed me tightly.
I squeezed her back, and we sat there like that for a moment as she cried.
(You see, grief sometimes comes prior to death of a loved and especially watching them slip away.)
I did however take notice the neighbor next door starring as if he thought it odd us hugging.
I proceeded on and reassured the wife that if she needed me I would stay or I’m just a phone call away and would come back if she needed me to.
She says, “I’ll reach out if so, I’m going to call our children over now and have these last moments with him to ourselves as a family.. just us”
Two hours later I got the call he was gone, I went over pronounced him deceased, called the funeral home for them, offered condolences and such.
I say my final goodbyes to the family but before I leave she tells me…
“Teffany, I have a message for you. My neighbor saw us outside earlier and he questioned me, not in a rude way but inquisitive,..as he thought initially it was odd but then a beautiful sight as he said I looked comforted and so much so that it warmed his heart.”
She said, I explained to him that my husband is terminally ill and dying .. that you are his nurse and were walking me through the process, educating us, being supporting and reassuring.
Teffany, my neighbor wanted me to let you know that should he or any of his family members find them selves in a situation in need of terminally ill care, he would love to have YOU as his nurse!
She said, “I’ll tell anyone how awesome you guys have been over at Utopia Hospice and especially how you Teffany were sent by God to be who I needed in this process of losing my husband! So thank you for seeing my family through🩵!!
So guys, THIS is why I get up each day pushing to be better even when I feel down!! There’s people watching and I want them to see God working through me.
