Made it to five campuses today, attended one ARD, consulted with 7 teachers/SLP, set up 3 AAC devices, and answered a thousand emails! Less than 20 days left of school!

I have at least one half day a week that needs to be dedicated to just keeping up with paperwork, consult notes, report writing, and prepping ARD meetings! So grateful for flexibility opportunities in my schedule! |psoftiktok |p /

Currently missing from my bag: my laptop charger (Oops | lost it), a USB-C charger, my headphones, some VOCAs, Velcro dots, AA batteries, and tape!

I don’t know what it is about AAC and babbling, but teachers hate it. Spoken language? Sure, make all the sounds! Touch the same icon or touch multiple icons on their AAC device…? How dare they, let’s take it away!

They are learning words! Affirm that language and let them explore! You’d be amazed what they are doing when they are babbling/stimming/playing on their AAC device!

Just try it! It may be hard at first, but make it fun for you and the kiddo! You with ROCK it!

Our students should not feel scared to learn. They should not feel scared to walk through the doors of a school. They should not have to practice lock downs and active shooter drills. They should be able to feel safe in an environment that values them, grows them, and teaches them. But instead, they fear.

Our teachers, therapists, counselors, administrators should not feel scared to go do our jobs. We should not feel scared walking into the doors of a school. We should not have to practice lock down drills and strategize how we could save our students in an unsafe situation. We should be able to feel safe in our environment. But instead, we fear.

And what keeps happening? Next to nothing. Laws do not change, policies do not change, lives are still taken in what should be a safe environment.

Please do not share this post as a sign of solidarity for educators and students. Do not grieve without acting. Take a stand to help prevent gun violence and save lives.

I’ve fallen back in love with language samples this year. All the evals get them and I even regularly get a new sample for multiple students on my caseload. I’m constantly writing down things students say and marking expanded utterance, co-articulately strengths, or natural language acquisition stages. How do you feel about language samples??

There’s nothing overwhelmingly special you have to do to communicate with your AAC user, but you do have to communicate the way they do!

✨model on their device!
✨give meaning to mistakes!
✨their language level + one!
✨verbally communicate too!
✨inspire them to communicate!

Okay, it’s a little more complicated than that, but that’s a good starting point ☺️
