Me to influencers pushing daily electrolyte drinks and alkaline water. 🤦♀️
Electrolytes + alkaline water are having a moment… but here’s the reality 👇
As a registered dietitian, I can tell you: most people do not need daily electrolyte drinks.
Electrolytes (like sodium, potassium, and magnesium) are already found in everyday foods like fruits, veggies, dairy, and even bread. For the average person doing light-to-moderate exercise, plain water + a balanced diet is more than enough to maintain hydration.
Electrolyte drinks can be helpful in specific situations:
✔️ Prolonged, intense exercise (think >60–90 minutes, especially in heat)
✔️ Heavy sweating
✔️ Illness with vomiting/diarrhea
But for everyday use? Many of these drinks are just expensive flavored water, often with added sugars or unnecessary sodium.
Now let’s talk about alkaline water…
Your body already tightly regulates its pH. What you drink doesn’t meaningfully change your blood pH, otherwise we’d be in serious trouble.
Research shows no consistent evidence that alkaline water:
✖️ “detoxes” your body
✖️ improves hydration beyond regular water
✖️ changes overall health outcomes
In fact, your stomach is highly acidic for a reason: it helps break down food and protect you from harmful bacteria. Alkaline water doesn’t override that.
Bottom line:
💧 Save your money
💧 Drink regular water
💧 Use electrolytes strategically as appropriate (not daily)
