How can doctors better predict outcomes after bile duct surgery?

In a recent study, Natasha Corbitt, M.D., examined the records of over 4,000 patients who had surgery to correct bile duct issues that could cause liver failure. She found that the levels of common markers in the blood (bilirubin and liver enzymes) were linked to liver survival. The study highlights the ongoing importance of these markers in predicting how well a liver will function after surgery. 🏥

This research may help doctors monitor patients more closely and plan care earlier. đź’™

We’re proud to celebrate one of our Professors of Surgery, Jennifer McBride, Ph.D., FAAA, on her recent publication!

🧠 “How the Brain Predicts the Face: Teaching the Brain as a Co-architect of the Face” (with Ralph Marcucio, Ph.D., FAAA) highlights an innovative approach to teaching anatomy, integrating brain and facial development to deepen clinical reasoning and spark curiosity in learners.

This work showcases how understanding developmental relationships can transform anatomy from memorization into meaningful, predictive insight for future clinicians.

What really causes death in cancer? 🤔

For decades, metastasis was thought to be the main cause, but new research from UT Southwestern’s Department of Surgery is challenging that belief.

A Nature Medicine study led by Dr. Matteo Ligorio suggests that tumors invading major blood vessels may trigger deadly blood clots and organ failure, opening the door to earlier detection and interventions.

This could change how we diagnose, manage, and treat cancer. đź’Ş

A widely used fracture risk calculator may help guide surgical decisions to treat patients with an endocrine disorder called primary hyperparathyroidism that causes progressive bone loss, according to a study led by UT Southwestern researcher Dr. Vivek Sant.

The findings, published in JAMA Network Open, suggest the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool could identify more patients who may benefit from a parathyroidectomy to potentially prevent fractures.
